What have you welded today??

Finished this off yesterday, copied from a photo that the customer supplied.

Off to the galvanisers with it in the morning.
It took a fair bit longer to make because I kept having to refer back to the blurry photo they sent me- so il be glad to see the back of it

Not quiet at the welding stage of my little metal roller project, made purely from the offcuts pile, based on a well sold item on a well know site

The dreaded off cuts pile!

Drive roller and handle found and made..

Quick eye up on how it may go together, threaded lifter/adjuster found and prep..

Another angle on how it may go (sort of).. clean up and tack up to follow.. I hope haha should have just brought one!

Hardest part is hunting out the scrap parts!

I really like the bikers cut from the gas bottle. It would look great with a fire in it.

I've got a couple of 2" 316 stainless threaded caps , I'm thinking of scrapping the first money box and making one from these. I've only got mild steel filler rod so would it be alright to weld it with those or should I do it autogenously? Any other tips for welding stainless without a foot pedal?

Some of my best Tig welds on stainless have been done without a peddle, speed and filler help me to control the puddle/pool and of corse setting an appropriate amperage for the gauge steel I am welding, what's right and wrong about choice of filler for a fire pit or BBQ is IMO irrelevant, of corse a wildly wrong filler selected from the millions of grades of steels could give you a problem but a mild filler on stainless for an arty farty job...only you'd know as long as it holds together and looks half decent I am sure it would be fine. Disclaimer: I am not responsible for the loss of any sossages in the advice of using the wrong filler wire for a BBQ or fire pit haha

I sold the free style MX pit and the guy collected it today, he was pleased.. took some time to draw them up then plasma the whole lot out, half the reason for the project was to improve my plasma skills

Weldequip does filler for SS in various flavours for a decent price in his maintenance packs.But dunno if m/s filler would work. I've tigged stainless with me lift start WP9V, I think there is an amps to thickness guide out there somwhere-Miller site, or maybe even on here, found you need less amps than straight mild. I can't remember if I have done SS autogenous though.

Guess if your fit up is good and the material is thick enough and you can get the puddle to flow from both/co e together then why not? I've used mild filler (mig) to weld plenty of stainless, mostly needs must exhausts, flows well and holds well. Take in mind I am a stick it together kind of bottom of the pile kind of welder haha

I am about to be struck down with an arc from the great welder in the sky no doubt, but, against all the "Thou shalt not" bits in the welding bible, I have used gas filler rods with TIG I blew a girt ole and thought-filler rod cooly pooly abit, bigger rod-more cooly downy, only got thicker gas rod, have a go then, worked. It will of course crumble into dust when X rayed but it aint gonna be coz it was a tool box lid.

I hope you backpurged those stainless exhausts, coz they will crack and fall to bits-I didn't on the ones I did and I'm afraid that they are still stuck together even on rigid mounted vvvvvvvvvvvvibbbbbbbbbbrate a bbbit big bore hardly dangerous motors, I must be lucky .

I use these which I got from a DIY shed over here, so I guess if you get the same flavour, they should do for what you want.

Nope no back purge, the exhaust still look fine today, years later., mind you do take into account such exhausts are on tractors and mowers made from off cuts of pipe! I know how it should be done, but purging uses gas and I am a tight git, plus I took a leaf from Ducati/termignoni book, they don't purge their systems, you'd think they would at £2,600.00 each but no, look inside and the fit up is poor and the welds are oxidised and look crap, sometimes you can even find the odd burn off of mig wire!! Shocking.. For a 30,000.00 motorcycle in the case of 1098R and 1199R etc you'd expect better! Don't get me wrong I just kid about such things and last bike system I did (repairs) again for Ducati (just shows it pays to purge) I used the trusty rubber glove with some pin holes to purge with argon. Ducati keep me in polishing and crack repairs! I get them looking good

And then on the other hand we have some BSB (from Lowes) Akras! Best welders in the world IMO.

looks good- exhaust porn, I am getting meself a little backpurge system together, they don't do it round here and you can't get the take offs to run a purge line, so I got a dispo bottle reg from weldequip(only ones that are any good) a bit o gas hose and I will use a diposable bottle to purge, or I was going to, the DIY shed have stopped stocking dispo Argon bottles now, so I'll have to see if the argon mix is any use unless I can track down dispo Argon bottles somewhere.
I did a very short test with my MIG on some stainless, then welded up an exhaust for a tractor ( a farmers one-not a harley) and it went ok so its summat I will bear in mind for any future stuff.
That was using the standard gas mix for m/s MIG. I can get that in dispo bottles so I might backpurge and MIG some stuff to see what results I get.

I have a Y section and two flow meters, also depends on the penetration, sometimes I get away without if just tacking up, guess it depends on what your doing, for an old lister what's the point, other than making sure the weld is good and it's not just going to fall apart haha
