A local builders mixer (old villiers) would not start, so he and a chap next door who is a welder (not me) decided to fit a little Honda motor, the shafts were different sizes so they decided to cut the one of the old engine for some reason as the sprocket was stuck fast, anyway after getting the new sprocket on the new engine they soon found out she ran at 1500rpm lolol ooops, shame they both failed to see the reduction gearbox on the old engine haha, soooo had to reweld the shaft so the old engine can be remounted and got running, prob only points or a condenser lol, so all in all a long lesson in gearing 
Its not perfect but it is only an old cement mixer after all

Have to admit if the motor was on it when it came I would have run it up, was funny....lol a n d I note that the reduction gear box reverses the crank so not only was she spinning flat out but it would have gone the wrong way lol Love to have seen them throw a shovel of sand in and it throw it straight back out...lol

While I was inside doing that my old man was welding up the lorry body....in the pouring rain lol Crazy they are, mig welding in the rain's not easy as it like to pop and splutter in the water, the art of it is to keep going so the work drys off in front of where your going haha...
Anyone else weld in the rain??, I was nearly killed once when I was about 14 after picking up the earth extension of our split phase arc welder, the rain had started and the extension lead for the earth had been undone, the earth extension was a second lead with a clamp on each end, they would clamp the main lead to the extension and then attach the other to the work, turns out as I picked up one clamp and walked over to pick up the other the rod/torch was now in a puddle of water by the digger bucket they were welding, I found myself now bolt upright able to see and process what I was looking at but I was stuck fast and unable to speak or move, lucky for me one of the workers ran to the main switch and shut it off, I fell to the floor and it took me some time to get up! A very odd experience I will never forget, a simple error on my part not to check if it had been switched off... Thats DC for you!

Yes, I used to weld in the rain, and once with saltwater spray coming up on board ship, MMA only, once in the wet in a brewery, when they tested the vessels/tanks/tuns or whatever they were called, big stainless steel things, welded by what was then called Argon Arc, some brain specialist decided to test them by using the fire hose-it shot out of the tank and turned into a water spitting cobra apparently, I was welding tank reinforcements further down the job, and thought, B-Hell, first site job I've had wi a roof over me ead and it bleeding leaks

Welded up these today,
this was a practice piece in ali, welding different thickness materials, I wanted 0 penetration but cocked that up, but the main objective was to deal with the differing materials, and the welding of smooth wall stock to chequer plate.
I also used minimum stick out to see how I coped with that. Its not super neat, but I learnt stuff and it works at the end of the practice, its a hard case for my tablet when I carry it on me mocycle, the penetration that broke through did not in fact cause many problems for this job, the fit up of chequer plate to smooth wall stock was tricky with the workshop kit I have, but I a plan for next time-maybe.
Next up was this:
bare bones it looks like this:
its a sliding height and angle adjustable wrist prop on my TIG bench, I have been propping my elbow up to now, so now I want to move on to propping my hand and lil finger and using the TIG fingers I bought some time back.
Not a bad days practice, tackled some tricky joints and setting up, and angles of torch and filler and stick out. Played with trimming the arc on AC by tweaking frequency and balance. Used a pyrex cup for first time,
going back to DC after AC was bliss, silence, and far less heat radiating from the job, but, I have to say, I now do not regret paying the extra for AC, it gets you thinking, and there are more settings to play with, and it adds another string to your bow.
I started to get the feel of the pedal today, the GYS pedal is a nice piece of kit, nicely made and sensitivity just about right.
Onwards and upwards.

This yesterday:
overhead cover for my abrasive wheel chop saw station, I have to use it right in the doorway if it rains, ditto my angle grinding station, so I dug out one of my fishermans brollies and welded up a support. Brollie is height and angle adjustable with guy line points, but one of the blessings of my area is that there is rarely any wind to speak of (except from me).
It worked ok so I am doing the same for my trusty Triton superjaws, cos I have a second brollie.

Not quite done, catch to make then she's good to go, be great on the beach chasing some bass
Top choke/cover is the bit that fell out while cuting the hole for the chimney, I was going to add a vent but she burns a treat!

its not mine.........
geezer had been struggling for someone locally to undertake the work that needed doing on the bike. its a bit of a home brew rep........some of the previous owners welding was a little bit
had to cut off and re-weld the 3 silencers back on at more aesthetically pleasing angles............all sorts of nonsense going on under the paint, mig, tig, brazing...........it was great fun
he left a happy bunny in a cloud of 2 stroke this morning

Made 4 locating plates welded in central pins for the levelling bolts on the base of my lathe, fitted them to wooden height packing and then levelled the lathe....will try to fit and power up the inverter tomorrow....hopefully...
