Here's that pipe I was on about. The welds are quite inconsistent but I'm fairly happy with it, considering it's only a first attempt.

In a few places I has a lack of shielding which caused spatter and soot, it turned out the torch hose was kinked.

It's more inconsistent on one side because I was quite out of a comfortable position and the tungsten had became contaminated without me noticing.

What do you think?
As you can see, I've got some left over for another attempt, and tips for next time?

I can't see you struggling to get employment if you can weld like that at 16!

I think it was galvanized (I did grind it off around the weld) but I don't know about scaffold pile, it's 3" diameter. I forgot the workshop mug.

Thanks for the compliment, I'm going to phone some local engineering and/or fabrication firms soon, to see if I can get an apprenticeship. I'm actually still 15 .

for grinding I have a 3M 6000 series cartridge mask I was given - its ace...keeps all the nasties out and isn't too bad to wear for long periods..

Does it fit under a welding mask?

I think the Jackson auto masks sold by migtigarc are shaped to take a face mask, I have just got a 3m mask I can wear with goggles without fogging them up so I wear that for grinding and plasma now, and am thinking about air fed- esab and Jackson
are both less expensive than the adflo system which is the one I would like , but too pricey for my pocket and level of welding work.
Very important to watch out for those fumes.

Depends on the mask, If you spaced the mask further away from your face it would be better, as with mine the lower part of the welding mask hits the 3m mask

I use and can recommend the 3M 7500 half mask with the 2000 series flat pancake filters. As I wear glasses under my helmet the mask needs to give a good seal against my face to prevent the glasses steaming up. The 7500 is the best I have found, soft, very flexible and very comfortable.
Should also add that it fits underneath my Speedglas ok.

What rods should I be buying for general ally fabrication on box, tube, and general sheet work?

No welding today but I cut up the excess of that pipe up ready for notching and welding, I also did another parallel line development to lay-out the notch (I wasn't happy with my old one) but I ******** it up and made it backwards. The lines were barely parallel either. Oh, and the printer's not working so I can't print out a good one.

I saw on here that 5356 were considered to be fairly general purpose flavour, so I bought 5356 and they have been OK.
