Mine is doing similar things - sometimes it goes full speed, so I slow it down on the control and it goes slow, then I can bring the speed back up again a little. Sometimes it will stay there, and sometimes it will run away with itself again. It's annoying, because there are lots of things I need it for at the moment, places to grind down where a proper-sized grinder is too big to get in.

Yes, mine's an Aldi one and they never have them in when I need one. Mine's pretty old too, I've just replaced the mains cable because it had broken around the end of the strain relief. The biggest trouble I have is that I'm using reinforced cutting discs, and on the higher speed I can watch as the disc loses diameter while I'm cutting with it. I've got a load of discs, but they last longer at lower speeds and I hate wasting things.
Last week i took the cabin windows out of my boat cos they was leaking. Stripped three down ok & cleaned up prior to resealing.
This afternoon just caught the edge of number 4 on the vice, Toughened glass...... Damm it shatterered into ten thousand bits.
Much wailing & gnashing of teeth, Now i have to get a new one made.

About £12k so far, same to rebuild, plus £130k lost generation because the whole site is off...

it has forces in two directions, so needs both axial and radial bearings. True it would be simpler with just tapered roller, but I didn't design it...
