3D Printing

Apologies for reverting to basics. I am thinking of buying a 3D printer for my young grandson. He likes Pokemon figurines. If he wants to print a figurine, how does he scan the original into a computer to get the code? Or doesn't it work like that? I also have some car parts which i would like to print, again, how is it done?

He could 3D scan existing figures, I haven't done it nor found out how but I believe it's done with webcam and a rotating table, possibly a laser pointer as well? Then I guess software to turn the images into a model - I mostly draw stuff in CAD.

OR... he could look on www.thingiverse.com, a quick search revealed upwards of 3000 printable Pokémon models, chess sets, keyrings... Have a look and see if they'd satisfy him

Most of the inexpensive 3D printers are single-extruder so only print one colour at a time, is he good at painting the models?

Any one know if fusion can open SKP files and edit them?
I have opened it but for some reason cant add an extrusion....its a simple one as all I need is to add two can holders into the ashtray blank for an MX5.

I did find that one but was not sure fusion can edit STL files. Lol

I am not fussed either one will be fine. just more frustrated that everytime I try to learn it something crops up....plus the wife seems to think if I am sitting down I am doing nothing.

I am getting along better printing now. I managed to print links for a drag chain that have been sticking and coming out perfect. Learnt a couple of important things that might be obvious to others.

The squish is easier to dial in on the ender 3 whilst it's printing and the bed temp for PLA varies not only between type of bed but between machines with the same bed.
Bed temp on the Anet is 60 and ender 3 is 70.

As below......for the immediate future plan on printing pre made stuff.

Designing is not easy or intuitive and scanning is a complete new box of frogs..........simple does not exist. But the more simple you want the more you have to pay and I am talking thousands not 100's sadly.

There are a few home brew designs where you use a 3D printer to print a turntable to which you strap your smart phone to do the scanning. Some other electronics to sort too though I think.

Getting the bed level and the first layer squish is crucial. Not only for the model but to ensure it sticks to the build plate.
If you decide to try ABS. Then use ABS Pro from steady tech. But get some pure abs and make a slurry out of acetone and cut up bits of ABS filament using a sponge on a stick smear it on the bed. It will stick and not warp..

What size do you want the holes and where?

Just eqi space them?

@ukracer , my lad appears to have come up trumps. Done in 360. Very roughly:

- opened the stl mesh
- convert to BRep, making sure you select new component rather than new body
- make a new file
- copy the created component to the new file
- sketch the circles to make the cylinder
- extrude these making sure it's a join operation
- cut the inner cylinder

I measured a cider can at 66mm OD. Made the holes 68mm ID with a nom 5mm wall thickness. 1.5mm rad on the leading edge where the can drops in. Maybe you'll want the cylinders deeper, bigger radius on the edge? Just let me know.

STL being emailed to you now. Note you'll have to print at 10% as for some reason it exports at x10.

Cheers mate. Most of that went straight over my head. Lol but probably explains why I don't stand a chance ...

No worries. I didn't have a beer or drink the cider can I measured from! Feel a bit cr@p. Bloody school close to where I work is closed due to this virus

Yeah I thought I had posted the caliper situation and prints up.

I will sort out photos later today. It's the 8th anniversary of my mother in law sudden death and my wife still goes to pieces all day. Actually gets grumpy and stroppy for the past 2 weeks or so but on the date she gets real upset.

@ukracer , the fact the cylinders project a bit over the "lip" that fits into the centre console, is that a problem? Can move them in a bit. Only noticed just now:

Thanks to @northwest for his recommendation of Factory3D for a 3D printer. A friend and I have just bought his RepRap printer and I must say his customer service is second to none. So far the product is also.

Peter , IIRC Google" photogramatics " I think that's what it's called ).

It should give you a YouTube choice of several similar methods .
There is/was a free programme where by you take up to 40 reasonable quality pictures of an object at different angles from above at the middle & from below below going round it 360 degrees . The programme stitches the pictures together to make a 3D computer generated object then it slices it using many many differing points to build up the printable item . you choose your printing qualities then send it to th printer ..it's how you can get accurate plastic reproductions of your head /body a piece of equipment .
