Any idea what grade the old one was? I thought 316 was pretty much indestructible in marine conditions.

No far from it
Salt eats the common stainless grades especially if they have been bent (stress corrosion)........316L performs better than 304L and it lasts a long time........that rudder will have had a few birthdays.
There are grades that resist salt water better, Copper containing Duplex is one

Many is the bemused boat owner that has wasted large amounts of their dosh on putting stainless steel chains on their anchor chains only to find the boat has broken free in a bit of a blow , due to th fact that the dielectric effect of the salt water , the chain links & the steel anchor moving about has caused them to be eaten away PDQ .

That rudder bit might also have come off something that requires new sacrificial zinc anode fitting , without a effective working system the ionization effect is also very pronounced .

Been making some frames to support some stainless vessels for a microbrewery, 40 x 40 box section fully welded as usual, and cleaned up to look nice

All cut up with the chop saw including the mitres, nice and quick, a bit of noise and dust doesn't bother me

Not stainless this time, aluminium, not much to say about it really other than its a no frills job, its just an enclosure to go round a machine that runs mostly unsupervised, it will be filled in with 10mm clear acrylic after installation, I'll see if I can get a picture when its finished.

Hope the floor's flat & level? we always fitted adjustable feet on our robot cell guarding. Does it need any form of interlocking on the door?

Floor is wood laminate over screeded concrete, whether the walls are plumb is a bigger concern, the machine is a small cnc router cutting plastic, interlocking is down to the customer but is mainly to contain the swarf from being thrown about rather than a safety issue,

The guy who was in charge of our sitework was a stickler for putting up the cells perfectly plumb and square to the millimetre, so when the customers engineer pointed out the new cell was crooked he went to great lengths with tape measure and spirit level to prove it was the customers surrounding equipment that was crooked not ours!

There is a five lever mortice lock fitted in there, its nearly twice the width of the box section, so its not just to accommodate the handle, I could have fabricated a fancy lock box but this is an industrial application and there is only a limited amount of time and money available to make some of this stuff, as much as I would like too, its just not practical when in business to turn every job into a work of art, the customer is more than pleased and that's the main thing.

Just sharing my thoughts based on one part.
I assumed that is the reason you put it up, for people to pass comment? It certainly wasn't intended to offend. Your a way better fabricator than I am no question there.

No offence taken at all Richard, comments are always welcome or there is no point in me posting this stuff, I do it hoping that others may find my methods useful for their own projects.
Bear in mind the job isn't finished yet, when its panelled with the polycarbonate sheet it will look a little less obvious that its been built out to fit the lock

Lovely job. Rather than the tabs, I would have probably stuck the poly sheet to the inside of the box using a thin double sided foam tape 'cause it won't half rattle when the doors shut!

I use mortice locks without handles in straight single box. In this application. A lockinox euro cylinder type lock with latching handle would have been a tad cheaper when you take into account fit time I suspect

It's a tidy enough job though and I understand time constraints and customer requests and suggestions are often better left unquestioned if they will actually work



If they said BS 3621 with lever latch handle and gave me a plan that's just what I might do

We were asked to supply a couple of robot welding cells without our standard 2m high steel guarding with interlocked access as the customer was going to make it themselves to reduce the cost. I called in a few months later and the robots were production welding with just a couple of plastic weld curtains to "protect" them . We did cover ourselves by supplying the equipment with a certificate of incorporation instead of our normal CE marking.
