Oh come on! when have you ever seen a BMW offroad, other than in a ditch in mildly slippery conditions?

Bet there was loads in Glastonbury Festival parking fields last week.
It's the venue of choice for the upwardly mobile to go play "hippy" for a few days

I struggle to get derv alight when I want a bonfire - end up using petrol or thinners to get it started.

Mix diesel & petrol - you'll struggle to put it out!

Badge cachet & image I suspect - it's weirdly important to some folk, where I really don't care as long as it does the job.
In 2005/6 myself & one other in the same firm were looking for a Co. Car with a fixed budget limit.
I went for a Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi, & the top-of-the-range, fully loaded model was in-budget.
Other guy was a total label & brand snob, & wouldn't entertain a Skoda because of the Badge. So he ended up with a VW Passat with the same engine etc but a basic model with wind up back windows, no air-con (mine had Climate).... but he had the right Badge

I been buying VW's and Skodas. Not that I think they are any better than any other marque - I don't.

But they are easier to repair - parts are available pattern - loads of info/wiring diagrams/cheap fixes about - plus the motortrade is flooded with cheap service/diagnostic tools for them.

I got a VW DSG Highline estate - Wifey has a Golf - and I got a fleet of UP's Citigos for loaners (the Citigos being lower spec have been better cars).

Bloke with the Tesla 3 MOT failure this week - looked like I was about to remove his organs as I handed him the final bill (with extras).

Did he think it was gonna run it on freesh air? Maybe?

I been buying VW's and Skodas. Not that I think they are any better than any other marque - I don't.

I've no particular beef with VW's (esp older ones) - though I have a deep dislike of anything with an electric handbrake (esp. When the calipers are coded to the ECU & cost over £400 a side like my mates old Passat Estate)

I get your point - I prefer a cable handbrake myself.

But the VAG calipers with internal motors are OK - far better than Toyota or ~French stuff with central motorbox and cables going to each rear wheel.

The old Gardner-engined gensets favoured by the Fairground guys... apart from being loud as hell & dirty, were pretty much indestructible & I reckon they'd have a good go at running on Custard.
There's a lot to be said for some of the old simple heftily-engineered stuff!

One of the car programmes did a test with 3 small hatchbacks, a Skoda, a Ford and another popular brand (can't remember which) with all the badges covered up, got 3 women to try them for a few hours each, 2 of them put the Skoda first and the other 2nd until they took the tape off the badges then non of them wanted the Skoda.

I used to love tearing down our gensets - 500kW powered by 16 litre Volvo Penta engines(TAD1631GE for the geeks), 2.5MW installed capacity at 12 locations - teardown was at 16,000 (was originally 10,000 hours but we stretched it with oil sample testing) hours give or take, only had one failure on loadbank test, crank pulley bearing picked up. Manufacturer covered the repair costs.

We relocated one installation halfway around the world, all flown in, emissions wouldn't make a blind bit of difference amongst the existing 'gross polluters'... These were specced to run on AVTUR in winter.

I've seen loads of V-P TD & TAD sets - they're pretty common along with Perkins 3000's.
If coolant changes / mtce is ignored, the brass injector sleeves/inserts end up weeping coolant, & it's a heads-off job (chances are the Radiator is kaput also). Happens a lot, but not the engines fault.

We had a fair few Perkins-based sets for the smaller locations, maintenance could be 'erratic' due to local movement restrictions but they just kept chugging along.

I see there's talk of not allowing EV's of any description on ferries..Imagine trying to put an EV fire out on a ferry!

More online fear, uncertainty and doubt? Meanwhile we have ferries here with. 700 kWh lithium on board to propel them.

Fire brigade want to use lots of water for WV fires, funnily enough ferries tend to have easy access to that

From what I’ve read it’s one Norwegian ferry company that has small ships (capacity is about a dozen cars max) so are unlikely to have the firefighting capabilities of a “proper” ferry (don’t mean that in any disrespect, it’s just a question of facilities). As far as I know all the major operators have said they have no plans to follow suit.

It may not be long until Norwegian car ferries disappeared, if they would not carry EVs. Now, what is the average life of a car in Norway? And, of course, that figure doesn’t include the relatively few hybrids.

ICE cars in Norway are toast, history - soon to become a rarity. Does that mean that Norwegians are more clever (or well informed) than a lot of Brits?
