I was aware of it, but it's that restrictive, I'm not aware of anybody who's actually made use of it.

It's a UK only exemption, so major vehicle manufacturer's have not really produced suitable vehicles as there is little commercial viability.
It doesn't apply to anything carrying goods, so is no use for couriers who are the ones most likely to make use of the exemption.

It was one of those law changes that was aimed to try and increase EV development/use, but became so restrictive, they might as well not have bothered.

As usual, it's gratifying to see that our public servants have done their research & due diligence, & come up with a viable and workable transport solution

This is no big surprise. Its a case of diminishing returns or suchlike for EV's where load-lugging is concerned.
So much power, needs such big & heavy power packs that the payload & range get smaller & more pointless the bigger you go..... so they become as much use as a chocolate welding torch.

That'll be (yet) another expensive White Elephant with little practical value at the Taxpayers expense then.

There's very sound reasons why big loco's are diesel-electric, or fed by overhead power lines.

Will we see a return of the electric tramway in cities several decades after they tore them all out? If they did, at least the electric bin lorry might actually be of some practical use.

Cardiff Council did this as well.
There was a media outcry when people started taking photos of them charging off stinky diesel generators
They are now switching back to normal bin lorries.

Initially Cardiff claimed it was temporary. Now they say they don't have the infrastructure so will switch back to diesel.
Remember the CF postcode covers a big area. From the city centre right up to the really steep hills in the valleys.

Oh c'mon. Really? You can honestly say that deploying hugely expensive machines to do a job of work.... that demonstrably aren't fit-for-purpose..... is "a positive advancement in technology"?

Tell me where the positive advancement is, in the environmental & financial cost, of manufacturing & operating a bin lorry that cannot complete a short collection round without needing to halve it so 2 runs are needed instead of 1.... for every round of collections, week-in, week-out?
How is that saving the planet, saving money, offering positives & advancement?

Clearly your barometer of efficiency and fitness for purpose, are different to any I've come across.

In theory (stress in theory) something like a bin wagon ought to be one of the easier commercial roles for an EV to fill.
- Short journeys base back to base.
- loads that in volume aren't that heavy compared to other loads like steel, aggregates etc.
Thing is, an empty bin lorry will be a heavy beast to begin with, as the steel container and compacting equipment all add up - so a typical say 16-tonne chassis cab underpinnings will lose a lot of payload there.
Add what must be some tonnes? in batteries, plus possible extra reinforcement & carriers for all the batteries on the chassis - and its an odds-on bet that the EV bin lorry payload.... is considerably less than its diesel counterpart.

I seen plastic car tanks drilled with a battery drill - this can be an expensive theft - tank can be over a £1k on some cars.

Think of Wales. Depot in Cardiff or maybe Pontypridd. Collecting from up the valleys. Some seriously steep hills.
