Happens all the time! It's amazing how embedded the idea is (even among electrical installers & pro's) that the electricity supply is infinite.
It never crosses lots of minds (many of whom really should know better) that the LAN may not have the energy at source, or the capacity at Distribution - to satisfy the new install.

I seen more than a couple of several hundred K installations where they've built it all first, only to find thereisnt the power for it.

Im waiting to have my holiday supply inspected/ tested for a charge point. Apparently they may need me to pay for an supply upgrade…..its installed 3 bleeping years. Were electric cars not a thing then. Odd though I could fit a 32 amp cooker, or welder socket, so why all the fuss for a charge point!

If upgrade is required there will be one of two things happening……There will be no charge point, or they will be upgrading free, or relocating the 2 poles in my fields that have no way leave on them!

. You couldn't make it up. If any private organisation was as inept (or key managerial people were) then the enterprise would liquefy fast and/or the executives fired.

We know what'll probably happen. The Govt will cause abject chaos, and finally deliver the power & network may many years too late, and at an exorbitant overspend of many magnitudes - thereby lumping further costs upon Joe Public.
No sooner will this be completed, when there will be an abrupt switch to a different technology, thereby rendering all the infrastructure redundant..... whereupon they'll send a load of our money ripping the stuff back out, and then starting a reinvestment calamity in the next big thing.

I wouldn't trust a UK Public Parasite to run a bath without help.... & yet these Remedial Clowns rake in a couple of hundred k a year to shoot us in the foot.

I wondered about this. When i got my EV i looked at getting a 30 amp charger fitted.; I thought at the same time why not have a 30A outlet for my welder installed. There was almost an order of magnitude between the 2 (part was the cost of the actual charger of course) but i can get a 30A adapter for my Tesla charger… so why wouldn’t i just connect it to that ? Does it have something to do with the car pulling a constant 30A for a long period of time??

In any case I didn’t do either in the end and just use an outside socket at 10A. Works a treat.

Not sure just think its all job creation. Did cross my mind to just put a blue plug on the car charger and plug it into the welder socket must admit.

I'm wondering.
It seems easy to vilify someone for not moving to the EV.

Of course, the biggest group of motorists who'll be the last to adopt EV's will be the ordinary working person, the lower-paid majority (that proportion who have no viable alternative but to use personal transport of course) & upon whom the Economy depends.
For this group - purchase price & the ability to afford to maintain & Repair (or replace) their transport is fundamental.

Where's the joined-up thinking?

Like many other things, either there's no joined up thinking, or there are good reason(s) but they're not being publicised.
Sceptics will no doubt tell you it's because the "good reasons" are for the good of the decision makers not for your good.


Another significant group are the small business owners who have decided to buy an EV (Tessla etc) using their company funds as it's a great way to extract £££ out of the business account without having to pay tax on it.
I personally know 2 small companies doing this (one took delivery of a new Tessla 3 months ago, the other is waiting for conformation of the delivery date).
In both case, the tax incentives are the only reason why they changed cars. Both had petrol / diesel cars that they would otherwise have kept for many more years otherwise.

No politics intended in this post, just some thoughts about the future direction of motoring in this country.

Couldn't agree more on the last part of your "good reasons" (you'd have to believe in the Tooth Fairy orbe off with the Pixies to not be a Sceptic where our Administration is concerned!

Again - spot on ref the Business "perk" where as usual the financial perks are always provided for those who aren't exactly wondering where their next meal or rent money is coming from.

The chap I know who had his Tesla for 3-years.... yup, savvy small business owner, sharp guy, works the system.
He binned his after his 3-year period though & went back to an ICE - even with the tax dodge etc - he couldn't be doing with the compromises & need for journey planning etc he found he had to do (so he told me).

You talking about just the cost of fuel / electric? No one’s getting 5p a mile in an EV these days (unless some very legacy cheap tariff) … so you’re doing pretty well !

mine today was doing 6 miles /kwh I have a 4.5p kwh tarrif overnight, you do the maths. its even cheaper on the solar panels,

Panorama tonight was an interesting look at the overall situation.
Was told by a engineer that there are numerous PV sites in SW that cant connect due to infrastructure problems, and has been like that for years

It's all OK, we're drilling for more oil and gas now, to provide the extra power and infrastructure for EVs and electric boilers

Comments like that make me chuckle especially when it is made by one of those pontificating ignorant armchair experts we see on what's laughably called , "News shows .

We will always need gas 7 oil for I suspect a couple of ceintures , hopefully in reducing amounts , not having it sourced by despots & blackmaiers is the big advantage of having home produced stuff as well as reduced miles it is transported to the UK

On Radio4 this morning someone from a motorway service area group said that they did as the government said and installed six charging points at each service area. Four out of five services cannot be connected as the electricity suppliers say there is insufficient power supply available.

Upgrading supply lines takes time and money . " Rome was not built in a day " as the saying goes neither will all the EV charging network supplies.

We've purchased . Mine was due to an Acos cancellation . A modified vehicle so the damage caused due to the modifications officially sanctioned & made , reduced the resale value significantly reduced it much to our advantage .
The four month old £35 k Outlander only cost us £13300 (ish ) with a ten year battery warrantee for 80 % of capacity carried forward from Motability to us ..

Had to laugh , at the appeal six months later the appeals board instantly reinstated my PIP & ability to have a new motability vehicle & paid me back all the cancelled payments .

No Rome wasnt built in a day……but after watching main stream TV last night about infrastructure……Rome would have built a Nuclear power station by the time ours get through planning. 10 years and they wonder why everything is so expensive!
If the electric everything is the future, rightly or wrongly we need the ziggies to power it, it aint rocket science……

Centuries?? But if we believe what we are told, we need to save the planet. We haven't got centuries.

It ain't rocket science to work out that you need a refuelling system to sustain a mass transport policy in place first - not just encourage/force the transport into use..... & then start faffing about with the energy to operate.

It's gross negligence & ineptitude on a nationwide scale. The UK was not, & is not, and will not be for some time - anywhere near ready to go all-electric.

I watched it, but couldn't believe the nonsense I was watching.

The Public will be paying dearly for all of this upgrading forever!
