Having driven past numerous wind farms in recent times that don't seem to be generating anything, in spite of reasonably windy conditions, it leaves me wondering what the heck is going on. There's one wind farm, just off the A44, that hasn't generated a single watt to the grid since it was built!

Overall, we are a Nett importer of Energy (also oil & gas) though yes?
AFAIK the UK is at or over its generating capacity, the networks lack the infrastructure in many areas to utilise and carry/deliver that capacity (let alone all the extra EV charge point feeds & increasing demand and is way behind the curve in increasing generation capability (& losing ground, not gaining it).
That trend surely indicates that the UK has to be getting increasingly dependent on buying-in (if it can carry & distribute that energy).
To top it off, our Govt is forcing on the reduction of ICE & transfer to EV, thereby compounding the situation.

That's surely got to set off alarm bells, and raise serious questions about the competency of out Administration?

(I reckon if you gave half of our elected & non-elected representatives & decision-makers a box of crayons & a colouring book each, they'd try eating the crayons).

Or selling them off for a quick buck to cover the cost of another blunder.

FIT was small scale (5MW and below?) only so not applicable to large scale wind farms etc?

I’ve no doubt they had some quite handsome incentives to begin with, but I think they’ve become competitive on their own merits recently.

Correct, over 5MW cfd, strike prices etc. Becomes a lottery whether it’s viable or not. Imagine building a massive pumped hydro - tunnel boring, turbines, cabling etc. 5 years of planning, another 5 to construct?

So the UK govt is just going to keep throwing money at this, in my mind it's a totally pointless exercise as the likes of China, India, South Africa will just carry on as they like.

All for our 1% contribution towards the World's pollution issue.

I wouldn’t take it at face value in terms of absolute numbers, but by all accounts they are ploughing ahead with it.

It might have been true 10 years ago to say they were doing nothing, but not so sure any more.

A neighbour of ours has been visiting china various industrial areas for about 10 years regularly. He’s commented a few times about how much progress hes been seeing with charge points and stuff….big difference there, government decides, people do, no 10 years in planning, protests and public enquiries!

I think there’s probably a happy medium to be had somewhere between us and them! On balance I think I prefer our way…

This is what seems so disproportionate when you consider the measures being taken by our government to achieve, I believe, a carbon neutral status 2050.

I realise that it’s related to developing technology in order that emerging economies can benefit from our investments, but ultimately, such countries are still going through their own ‘Industrial Revolution‘ and I believe that our efforts to avert / minimise their impact on global warming will be minimal at best.
