I did think about painting the outside of some parts. But it's going to get covered in crud and chippings. Plus finding paint is a joke and prices are stupid.

Haven't done a great deal as weather is totally crud. Been painting some parts .hopefully be able to reassemble soon.

If you're having the ram ground then at least scrape in, or at the very least oil-flake the short ways or your grinding costs will soon be wasted money. You need the oil pockets that scraping and flaking create to provide lubrication for the ram ways. If you don't, wear on the newly ground ram will be vastly accelerated.

Neither my Alba shaper or my Atlas lathe have any flaking, just plain ground ways, I often wonder about that.

it had been run dry and it had picked up so it needed grinding i'm going to do a bit of scraping on it when i get it back. here's a pic

Yes that's definitely been run dry. How much is being ground off

he's just going to grind enough off to get rid of the bad bits i would have thought about ten thou but it dosent matter cos it's the gib side. all the other surfaces are good. the gib needs grinding aswell. mine was in a really poor state. i didn't think it was too bad until i got it home and took it to bits. it had been on it's side at some point and there was loads of things bent. i've done loads of work on it. if i had known i would have run away from it

The ram has long ways because it slides back and forth on the short ways of the shaper housing.

Ah got it now! There are old grooves in the short ways, but it's a mystery to me how enough oil gets down there as there are only oilers on the top of the gibb and dovetail, which used to be button type which hold hardly anything, I replaced them with cups. Still not exactly well designed as the oil can pour straight out past the ram each end of a long stoke.

Well I have come to the conclusion that myself and hand painting don't mix. But done the parts I needed. Just got wait until dry before I can put back together and carry on.

i'm going to make a handwheel to fit over the end of the shaft (the one with the T slot ) so i can manually move the ram for setting up
