Thanks Dapph, I will look into that, unfortunately as its my first full day off in a while SWMBO has a list of 'little' jobs that she wants me to get to today.

Can any one explain how I get a Thingyverse file off the Thingyverse website so I can see if I can print the darn thing .
So far I appear to have successfully down loaded the file from Thingyverse for a parametric hinge .
I appear to have isolated the file and loaded it onto a memory card .
Is it now just a case of setting up my printer and putting the memory card in the reading slot ?

you need to open the file in slicr, set the parameters to suit your printer, generate the gcode, save the gcode to the memory card, then print.

Have fun!! I really took my time with mine and spent 4 days putting it together and most of the last week has been spent printing upgrades for it...

Wheeee! after a bit of unusual disjointed studying , forgetting lots and having to re learn it a couple of times I've finally managed at the age of 68 to 3D draw using Fusion 360 a slip over lid glasses case 140 mm high 40 breadth x 50 width , the lid slides on over the end . If I'm up to it after a surgical procedure on my spine tomorrow , I hope to code up it for the Prusa original 3i 3A printer & print it up.
It took me nearly three hours .. a decent person familiar with 360 ought to be able to do it in 3 minutes flat .

The surgical procedure went well, a total of ( like wasp stings ) six local anaesthetics mixed with cortisone injections three either side of my spine at L2/3 and L4/5 and 23 years of very painfilled days melted away two minutes after the first injection was done . I couldn't do anything yesterday as the release of the muscle groups spread through my body making me all red flushed & hot like I'd got bad sunburn. The stored toxins in the muscles also had something to do with it I suspect . It may or may not last the cortisone will take 10 to 14 days to start taking down the internal inflammations around my spinal cord and spinal nerves and may last for 3 to 6 months or forever
Today I ached tremendously as a result of the release but found I can sit and play awhile at the computer . So I spent several hours on & off searching for some decent YouTube video training relating to Automakers Fusion 360 3D CAD programme .
I've found a series by a guy called Lars …. there are at least 180 of his videos on the tube .. it's a style of learning I can follow & is called " Fusion 360 tutorial for the absolute beginner part 1 . # LARSLIVE " ..
So I've set up an old lap top to watch the training videos by Lars videos on adjacent to my big screen stand alone computer .
The big 21.5 inch stand alone is to run Fusion 360 on whilst watching Lars vido for Fusion 360 training , it's easy to stop & rewind many time while I work out what he did , then do it on my stand alone . Before I made this set up possible ,I was trying to remember 30 min of instructions go to sleep and remember it over night ..... no chance of remembering it , the next day or very little chance .

The video number #180 deals with getting it from Fusion 360 into to the printer . To me it was vital watching .. I'll be looking at it several more times using the laptop as I do it on nth big screen then create a memory card , for I'm defo a monkey see monkey do sort of guy these days plus the printer is 40 yards away in our log cabin office .

Lars is the man - I used his tutorials to learn fusion, and still subscribed now
there's also a Welsh bloke - TFI? - but tbh, although his videos have some useful info, I find him annoying.

I suppose you ought to state which machine you are referring to .
On my Prusa original iD 3D supplied SD card it is the Prusa logo about three inches long by 3/4 of an inch wide with the raised letters in caps " PRUSA on the finished article.
If you put your card in your reader it should show you the titles of the file ...…. programmes some where in the wording of each file.

After 2 days of frustration and several calibration prints i have now got mine dialled in to 0.05mm xy, Happy days!!!

Don't move it , nudge the table & do keep the room temp stable and free of draughts .
Recheck it in a weeks time , I discovered that my printer in it's enclosed cabinet with two 4 Watt heater bulbs wired in parallel to heat the enclosure had gone out of true.... it's not been used for five days .
It automatically self checks the alignments on the bed at nine points at the start of every print ..kept telling me the " z axis is out , please adjust . Had to reset Z then calibrate the nine points on the bed .
It might have been the case that the heater bulbs warmed up one side of the machine a fraction more than the other far side as it has an aluminium frame & that made the difference of half a few 0.01's of a mm.

I have been keeping my failed prints, scrap from supports and my prints for calibration and testing... I weighed them today after installing my second 1KG spool... Approximately 250g

I didn't think the waste would be running at 25%!!!
I am guessing that as I gain more experience this will go down somewhat but I found it interesting to see how much of my first 1KG spool has actually been turned into useable prints.

Given time you may be able to minimise supports etc, this not only saves money it also reduces the cleanup needed. As you get you printer setup dialed in you can get away with bigger and bigger overhangs and also learn to design / orientate things more efficiently.
Finally feel like I am getting both 3D designing and 3D printing at a basic level at least, spent the last few days coming up with a battery holder I can wall mount to take a lot of batteries (Costco 48 pack AA and AAA) with stock rotation in OpenSCAD. Fully adjustable by parameters (battery size, ramp angle, leg length, wall thickness, number of layers etc) although it starts to be more of a Maths challenge than anything else - just printed one that will hold 62 AAA batteries so I can wall mount it and not have to work about checking expiry dates for all the ones that end up rattling around the drawer.
Curves are a bit rough - I am going to set up another computer for the build events so I can up the number of facets significantly and let it run remotely.
