Another thing I noticed is that I can now move along faster than I was before, now that I know exactly what I'm looking for in the puddle. Will be sure to get plenty of practice in over the weekend

Just an FYI for anyone, the r-tech 170 AC/dc digital is a nice set, it is a lot better than the earlier analogue set I have.

Oh and yes an absolute natural teacher!

As a fully qualified teaching assessor among many other things I can certainly vouch for that.

But more practicing done today. Getting the hang of the technique now, just really need to master the pedal curve and have a bit more confidence seem to be either too hot or too cold. But its getting there.

Thought I'd have a bash at stainless tube.....I must say I found this so much easier to control, the arc seemed to be a lot more composed than with ally and aside from the difficulties of welding pipe rather than flat sheet metal I found it rather easy.....No idea how good/bad the welds are though

Needless to say it wasn't back purged so don't expect the inside to look good

Move them magnets they'll be throwing your arc all over the place. Looks alright, bit hot with lack of shielding. I personally weld from the 3 o clock position to the 11/12 o clock position (anticlockwise around the pipe) when doing tube. I find it gives the best repeatable beads, aesthetics wise. Probably best penetration too.

That's more the colour youre after. That's 0.9 sheet rolled to make a tube. That's the seam weld.

Had another play around, still trying different positions etc to see how I prefer welding pipe.

It seems I do best with the tungsten pointing towards me, can be awkward to get the filler rod in but not impossible.

I'll keep playing though and I'm sure in time I'll get a better technique sorted for myself

Hi,

Yet another tig newbie here. Been toying around just trying to get used to the technique and trying to find a comfortable position.

Took some pictures of a couple of beads I've ran and would be nice to get some feedback on how I could improve it, whether it be any error in technique, settings adjustment or whatever.

So for the spec, I was welding on 2mm aluminium sheet, cleaned it up with S/s wire brush and acetone. I was using a blue tip 2% lanthanated 1.6 tungsten and a 1.6 filler rod to match. Gas flow is around 7lpm and using a standard no5 cup. Set the amps to max of 85 and controlled with foot pedal. A.c. balance was 35% and a.c. freq was 120hz

Looking good mTe keep it up.. There are some wonderful Guys on this forum, newbies like me as well, are so fortunate to be able to tap into their wealth of experience..

Not sure why it posted both pictures twice in the last post.

Anyway, been playing with more odd pieces trying to make the welds more difficult with the bends etc. It's coming along but I need to teach my left hand to sit still as the torch is still very shaky.

They both look alright. Your just fine tuning consistancy. If your referring to the colours of the tint. Don't worry about it. Just look for performing a good defect less weld. Fusion, penetration, and reinforcement are what you should be worrying about. You'll know if your getting it too hot as it will look very grey dull and flat. Your not getting this so your doing a nice job.
