It's lacking a few creature comforts, things like windows and door catches but it was fun. My new air-clutch wasn't working quite right and I had to modify the linkage slightly but all good now. A couple of little diesel leaks, finish and tidy the wiring.

I had to pull the headlining out again - it has ended up too low, OK for a short-**** like me but a taller driver would struggle.

In the short term, a crappy old horse-truck body with a Luton. It's the original and has been parked up the back for years. Just going to gut it and put a few creature comforts in so that we can go camping. If we like it, the next project would be so strip it back to the deck and build a wooden house-truck.

Drove it out and turned it round ready to do the rear brakes.


This is a great tool


... for removing the wheel nuts. It has something like a 30:1 reduction and made getting the rear wheels off a doddle. I saw a guy on YouTube using one


Then I stripped down the brakes



Here's a question - the mechanism that applies the brakes has two steel pistons in a steel cylinder. These are pushed apart by a wedge mechanism which is pulled by the slave cylinder. What grease should I be using on the steel pistons?

I would think a wheel bearing grease would do the trick?....I use that stuff for just about everything!

There is a specific brake grease you used to get a little sachet off years ago when changing shoes for the metal bits. I think white grease will do it.

I've only ever used copper ease on break bits... you need somehting that won't get runny when it gets hot and drip onto your breaking surfaces


thinking about it... I have no idea how copper ease reacts to heat / how much hotter it would have to be to run vs grease... it's just what I was taught as a kid :-o

White brake grease for the mechanical bits, use the red grease for rubber seals.

Hi, When I was at the bus company we used a black Graphite type grease, it not being oil based means it doesn't soak up the lining dust or run out when it gets hot.

I'd vote for something which is high temp and rubber safe....Lithium grease maybe?

There're no rubber parts nearby and it certainly looks like graphite grease on there now but something I read about that grease said not for use above 60º C.
