BOC and Volkszone - Gas Offer

Paul, I just renewed mine today;
Bottle rental = £34.15 + VAT
Refill = £20.38 + VAT & £1.10 (+VAT?) 'green tax!'

They also mentioned a delivery charge of (cough) £40+. still uncertain whether they would charge a delivery rate even if you collected from the depot!

Well chaps, Took my empty argosheild universal back today and went home with a Y size Argosheild light on the Volkszone offer, Waited a couple of hours and rang BOC main number to check that I was being billed correctly and also was not being charged handling.Every thing has gone through O.K.
Roll on the time when/if the pure argon is on a similar deal.

I am trying to get this deal at the moment, had to provide my membership details to the guy over the phone at the stoke branch.

I took my small co2 rental back yesterday and they gave me a 20l y cylinder of 'argoshield' - no prices were mentioned as he said call back with the offer details (didn't know if it was still on or what the details were in the shop) so just done that now and waiting to confirm if i can have that deal.

Bummer for me really as i have had two co2 (next size down from the Y?) bottles and they have lasted 2x 0.7kg of 0.6mm wire I have found my gauges are goosed and the pipe had cracks,,,so have been given some argon gauges and bought new pipe..think this is all gonna work out expensive from boc

Can't wait to weld with argoshield as I have aint used it yet!

I got my bottle exhanged last week and got charged £39 inc VAT, so that's not stacking up with some other recent quotes.

The Volkszone offer essentially was for home welding enthusiasts that didnt want expensive contracts for bottle rental.

To break it down, these are the costs for Volkszone vs 'standard' contract rates :

Argoshield Y Size Cylinder (Volkszone Offer)
Fill Cost £35 approx
Environment Surcharge - £1.32
Rent - £35 (Yearly)
Pickup Charge - £0
TOTAL approx £70

Argon Y Size Cylinder (Standard):
Fill Cost - £68.38
Environment Surcharge - £1.32
Rent - £9.00 (Monthly) / £100.20 (Yearly)
Pickup Charge - £15.66
TOTAL approx £185

So in rough terms, the volkszone offer saves you about £30 odd on the fill charge, about £60 odd on the yearly rental and there is no pickup charge. You save roughly £115 via the deal.

Well, I don't know if this holds true for everyone else, but I'd think you'll end up using it quite a bit more than you thought.
Once you're up and running, you'd be more likely to worry about it running out, than it lasting for too long, I would think. Usually you'd use quite a bit more than you'd imagine when you're practicing/getting used to things.

Are these calculations right?

Throw away from machine mart 110L = 11 minutes at 10lpm = 0.18 hours of use

Hobbyweld cylinder 9L x 137bar = 1233L = 123 minutes at 10lpm = 2.05 hours of use

BOC Y bottle 20L x 230bar = 4600L = 460 minutes at 10lpm = 7.6 hours of use


whats the average lpm setting when doing light welding work anyway?
