they didnt quote a 5 year rental price only 1 year.
as it for the hobbist that might not be available ?

so yes the bottle refill's at BOC work out cheaper

but the rental works out a lot lot more compared to elmdale.


i was thinking on getting two 10L bottles.

1 argon/co2mix
1 pure argon.

so

100.80 - 10 year right to use 10L bottle
100.80 - 10 year right to use 10L bottle
23.63 - pure argon gas
23.00 - argon/co2 mix
£248.23

them all i got is gas refill's for next ten years ,no yearly rental etc. or charges to collect bottle

i know bottles at elmdale are only filled to 200bar, so 30bar less to BOC


anyone good at working out how long a 200 bar 10L bottle would last if you was doing say 10lpm ?

yes, i would think if you do a lot of welding then BOC would proberly be the way to go.

but a 20L normally lasts me a year or anything upto 18 months.

though i was helping a friend out last week, doing welding outside i did 100bar in a week.
not the norm for me.

yes 30bar is a fair bit. but its not like some that are only filled to 137bar. to BOC's 230bar

so how many bottles do you use PDG a year. and what size.

yes i see there isn't many elmdale points about ,yet BOC have loads.

elmdale in rayleigh for me is only 7 miles away.

Fair enough, in which case I'll ask why BOC charges £21 more to rent the same bottle

I already did that.

Its a deal we put together ourselves
and to pass such a low price on the Argon and have no collection fee we
had to put a higher price on the rental

ive never tried a pub bottle co2, though my mate used to use it on his gas/no gas 90mig.

i went straight to boc argoshield universal when i got my mig

yer i know what your saying.


difference between BOC argon refill and elmdale is only £7.55 (elmdale dearer)
and argon mix is more at £12.63.

but the huge rental saving of £482.40 on pure argon over 10 years
and £271.80 on argon mix.
you would need to have so many refills to make it work out the same over ten years.
it too late in the evening to get technical with maths to work out how many refills for each gas type and how many bottle over the ten years your need to have LOL

my mate has an elmdale bottle for his little mig,

he using the BOC W size for big work mig, and W for the tig.

il see if i can borrow it and give it a try and see what its like.
should swing me one way or the other lol

yes that's true, ive only had 1 problem with BOC's gas bottle.
in scotland the bottle i was given had a bad valve, it wouldnt seal properly to the reg.
so while you was using it, you was also leaking it between reg and valve.
there was a scratch in the seat area.
they sent another bottle out on a lorry that was going up north and i met up with it and exchanged bottles.
no fuss and no charge.......
other then that one time in 15 years its been hassle free.
so i know what your saying,
il see my mate tomorrow and see about his elmdale bottle and if any feedback.

i rang the head office on 0800 111 333

and they took my details then called me back ,
they knew about the v/s discount without me telling them,
they filled the forms in online ,then emailed them to me,
i will take them, to our BOC depot 1 mile away where they will supply me with the gas,


argon light .. argon/co2/oxygen mix...

20l litre bottle filled to 230 bar ...

rental £46.44
climate tax..£1.63


£ 79 to walk away with the gas....

I just found this thread!!

I have had a contract with BOC for a Y bottle Argoshield Light for the past 5 or 6 years. Used it once 4 years ago. I have alsways been billed about £120 annually to have this bottle sat in the garage. I have just paid BOC another £12x.00 a few weeks ago

1. Do I understand that if I take this bottle back to BOC tomorrow, I will get part of this 12x.00 back?
2. Do I understand that if I mention that I am Volkzone member, I can create a NEW membership with BOC to get the same bottle with the same gas mix for half the price for the coming year??!

Yes on both counts, they will want the existing cylinder back as it may not have a bar code on.

rental £46.44 for that yes you would be paying alot less in the year just by swapping contracts with boc

I believe from reading here you can arrange the contract before you go back with the bottle and you should be able to swap or you might be lucky and have your contract changed with them therefore haveing credit in your account with boc

but someone else might point you in the right direction other then me

IIRC my SGS bottles were filled to ~200 bar. (Had them a while so can't exactly remember but it definitely was way more than 137)

The BOC deal is good, but I just don't use enough gas to justify the rental. I've found SGS to be OK for my needs, if I start using more I'd definitely consider switching to BOC though.

I paid £30 for a hobbyweld 9 litre and was never filled to 137 bar as advertised, usually about 110 bar. When worked out it's about 4x cost of boc y refill so I changed but it really depends how much you use but I think the boc rental at less than £1 per week is a bargain really.

My nearest agent is 30 minutes away, do i just pop in with my account number and grab a bottle over the counter?
