BOC and Volkszone - Gas Offer

I'm confused I'm planning on buying a tig welder setup for my car project. However in the meantime my mechanic is going to lend me a MIG welder to learn some basics. All he said to me was I need to get a bottle of gas presumably argon. Funnily enough the genie bottle was advertised in one of my trade magazines. However when you look on the boc website there's no pricing for the new bottles. From reading threads there seems to be 2 types of argon shielding gas.
I'm quite close to the boc headquarters I recall going there on.a schooltrip

tig welder for a car project.?
tig and mig are two totally different styles of welding.
mig is fairly easy to grasp and get good at.
tig is a totally different kettle of fish.
you need a good steady hand and be good at multitasking LOL

i would of thought mig would be better suited for a car project ?
tig is slower and more ... what's the word im looking for ........

tig uses pure argon for gas.
where mig uses an argon mix.. like argoshield light from BOC

if you ask for the hobby deal prices should be as follows.

Argoshield Light 20L Y size
gas refill £33.38
yearly rental £47.34

Pureshield Argon 20L Y size
gas refill £40.66
yearly rental £68.40

Ultimately its aluminium intercooler piping hence the tig. However I can make up a basic shape/template in metal with the MIG. My only experience with welding is oxy lead burning so far.

I just spoke to BOC through the live chat on their website and was told that the price of a Y cylinder on the volkszone deal is £68.40 rental, £61 gas and pick up only? A little confused after reading on here that gas price is around the £40 mark?

I think its a specific person or geoup who have been tasked with targetting hobby welders with this deal. The rest seem completely unaware, consistent with the size of this huge company.

I emailed a Danielle Martin who seems to be working from the Manchester office. This was middle of last week and everything was arranged online and ready in about 3 days. Prices were consistent with the Volkzone offer and MUCH cheaper than what I was paying BOC on the stansard Y bottle.

Today I went in, passed my acct number over the counter and took a Y cyclinder home. Forget the Genie, its as expensive as the standard deal but ibviously contains more gas, if you need it.

Just received an email from Stuart Anderson and the prices are £61 rental and £35 for refills, tried calling on the number he left but cant get through, isit possible to email him back and set-up an account that way?

ive just been to our local boc depot,
and it was baren,
all of the welders had gone and most shelves were empty

i asked if they were closing and the manager said no, but they are having a change,

he said 22 depots had gone and was hoping his one had another 3-4 years..
i doubt it as its never busy

Yes all on the same account, if its for filling balloons the price isn't to bad.
But if it's Pure for tig, make sure you are sitting down when you get the price.

If it's under the Volkszone scheme I think not, as they've only recently extended it to include pure Argon - if it's an 'ordinary' account you should be OK.

The Volkzone scheme gives you Argolite and just recently, Argon at the reduced rate, no other gases.

I've just been to see a local BOC agent for something else, but they said that the bradford and leeds gas and gear sites are now closed. they are still showing on the BOC website though. I've then tried to phone the bradford one and its rung a few times and then gone to voicemail.

think it might be best to check your depot is still open before setting off.

think I'll go with the local agent in future as they open early enough for me to get gas from them without needing to take a day off work.

I've just recieved some post from the bradford depot listing their clearance sale, so I guess they may still be open.

Rang the number, email arrived filled in the form, had account number back in under an hour.

Price 50.88 plus vat rental, works out with vat at 61 quid for argoshield universal.

Been putting of but my dodgey air products supply is dry!

however theres an alternative agent collection point

aire valley gas limited stanley rd bd2 1as which is canal rd more shipley end of bradford

but i think aire valley has just closed down on that rd and knocked down as well theres nothing on the left side anymore as you turn onto the street itself i pass it weekly there

i have it within a letter from boc but i will get a friend to check on the company there as he only lives up in that area its why i go there often

and i will let the forum know if another exists there or not

from what ive just been told it moved across the rd from where it was
