A belt sander might be a better option, it's more tolerant of nails. If only to identify where any nails are.

a bandsaw would be better with a multiuse blade in it as it will cut through the wood and metal

All great suggestions, except I'm feeling lazy, and don't want to spend a week sanding/planing these things. I know I will, but just don't want to.

Anyway, didn't get much done, other essential tasks had to be done. Moving furniture, etc. Did file the welding down. My welding is rubbish recently.

I think I've a day of prep in this prior to painting, so unlikely by this weekend.

I'm again surprised how rusty it is under that paint. It certainly justifies the extra work to strip the black paint off.

Boring. More prep. I didn't get the vent hood removed.

But, on the up side....The sides are almost ready and the lower pressing is likewise. And lots of rust had been painted with phosphoric acid.

I think I've killed the bearing in my Hitachi grinder. Sad, I've had that for decades. I'll rebuild it some wet day.

Phosphoric acid works.

Overnight it's turned everything black, with white powder.

Once wirebrushed off its clear that there's very little rust left.

Second treatment should leave it in great shape for the zinc phosphate paint.

I can see good grey steel under the second coat.

Very dull work, this, but essential for a long lasting result, I think.

Oh, yes! A&E, for a shattered shoulder socket. Hurrah. I am now a titanium human hybrid.

Anyway I'm fit enough to get on with this, so the goal for today is to remove the end grille and hood. It's just a case of cutting away rivets, and levering off the panels.

The hood is fighting, so more cutting required.

There's metal straightening to do. Paint to remove, rust to remove and then I can paint. Progress!

Only did a bit today. Straightening the end panel so I can seal a window there.

And taking the belly out of the side of the end panel. I'll heat this and hammer it when it's not a weekend.

Heat didn't have much effect, mapp torch isn't up to the task, so I ratcheted the hell out of it and whacked with the sledge.

Good physio for my shoulder.

And it worked.

Next, paint stripping, re-do the citric acid, re-phosphoric acid and paint!

Hopefully have a coat of primer on by the end of May.

Wire brushing is very boring.

I think I'll go straight to paint, there's very little corrosion.

The inside is also done. I was going to go to a Landrover show tomorrow, but I might pass, and get on with this instead. It would be nice to get paint on whilst the weather is good. Get the rest of the steel cleaners and start putting the zinc phosphate on.

I'm done with the wire brushing. The wire brushing is also done. I'm plucking chunks of wire out of all sorts of places.

But, it's done. I can paint tomorrow.

I'll not get a complete coat, but I can get one section done and do more of an evening.

Paint is more fun than wire brushing. Quieter, anyway.

I think I'm one third of the way with the zinc coat. Slow going. I'll do more after work this week. Make the best of the dry weather.

I'm getting quite paranoid about rust now. So will be putting another layer of the zinc on the inside and on the lower rail and pressings on the outside.

Paint. It's slow, but effective. And the weather is nice.

Nearly finished the first coat of zinc.

I'll use a roller for the jotamastic.
