Hi thanks for your reply, we are really just a 1man band and his sidekick, we both weld well and have had no problems when our welds have been test in the past! It is literally a cost thing, we have recently moved premises the rent now is high but we have more space, things have been tight for us all and unless it can be done for the 2 k mark then it is well out of our range.
We have been in contact with business wales etc and no grant money is available, we have no where to turn and basically our little business will be forced to close due to this legislation!

Speak to the Manufacturing Advisory Service before you do anything - you can get a grant towards BS1090 accreditation. It's limited to £1000-00 now, but better than a kick in the nuts.
We are nearly there now, EXC 3, full WPS's, plus re-coded everyone to BS9606, and done ISO 9001 at the same time, budget i reckon £25-30K plus my time.

If your going for the basic level, EXC 2, pre-prescribed WPS's etc, i'd say £5-8k.

Its a sad fact that not a great deal can legally be done without BS1090 accreditation. It will/has wiped out a few of the smaller end fabricators, but its legislation, there's nothing we can do about it other than shell out some money and deal with it.

There was a slim chance that the deadline would get extended but seeing as we are now in mid May and there has been no official word yet, i doubt it.

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know the requirement f0r supplementary NDT testing and 1090 ive read Table 24 and 1090 with Section 5.5.1 of the NSSS Spec and it seem contradictory. I think as a minimum its 10% of ongoing production ?

Matt, are you finding many fabricators have got/getting close to being 1090 compliant now?
I guess there's still a lot who don't know about it or are burying their head in the sand.

Depends what execution class, but i'd say 3-4K as an absolute minimum. Theres a 1k grant available from MAS.
It's probably less hassle just to sub any CE work out?

probably, I have a few mates locally that work for big fab co.s so will end up going down that route i think, at least till my business starts expanding then i can look at the cost then!

I recon id need a new welder, or at least a few mods to allow current and voltage to be read as mine has no guages/dials for wps settings.

when i had a meeting with MAS they suggested i contacted trading standards as they thought i maybe exempt as most of my work is bespoke,after contacting them ,was directed to HSQE who stated 'as i specialise in bespoke items ' then i am producing 'series' bespoke items & aren't exempt ,however there small print states craft industries such as blacksmithing can be exempt,yet when i enquired about making & installing for example a balustrade, which has a mixture of workshop forged & cut [in the bandsaw] pieces all assembled/erected on-site they didn't bother to reply.I also feel some clarification will be decided in court rather than around a desk which will be tragic.

Costs so far....EXC2 - FPC, Welder Quals, Weld Procedures, Calibrations, Quality Procedures, Training, RWC, Notified Body Gap and Stage 2 Audits........... £33500-00
Small Company - No in-house Design, In-House Detailing, 7 welder/platers, 1 draughtsman, 2 office staff.....

But the end is in sight............

Stage 1 assessment booked in now. Nearly there.

Taken our first job under BS1090 on, straight into Execution Class 3. Glad we went for the higher standard.

Hello!! Update, today we had a lady come and see us from some consulting company, she was sent by some welsh business grant people. Good news!! There are 50% grants available to businesses in wales to complete the certification, bad news is you have to pay upfront and claim it back. She has estimated that it will cost us between 15 and 20k, so 7.5 to 10k with the grant. Bad news is we can neither afford or justify it so we will be finishing our structural work this month and our repairs in the following month, then alas closing the doors we think. I hope this info will help someone, any numbers etc required drop me a line.

Thats a shame, not enough other work to warrant staying open then?

July has been looming on the horizon for sometime now. We've been doing bits towards it gradually over the last 6-9 months or so, so it didn't all come at once. Both in time and changes, as well as the money probably. There is a few points that were picked up on our first audit that are just about sorted now. Even before getting the approval, we've been treating jobs as though they are 1090 so it becomes second nature prior to July.

Hello hitch thanks for your comments, as I have stated before the first time we or the other two local firms knew about all this was about a month ago.Some one just happened to mention it and word spread between us, panic ensued!!! It is in the sticks out here and we didn't think to look on line etc for these things!
We are a busy little welding shop but we pay really expensive rent after a misinformed moved to a so called enterprise zone, thanks welsh assembly!
The cost of all our materials is generally higher than most other peoples on here, we have a two week wait for steel stock, thanks B & M! So the money is not available.

Was looking around the interwebs to see how's the EN1090 going in our neighbour countries, and found this thread amongst others.

In Belgium, only the larger companies are already certified for certain EXC classes, most medium sized fabricators (10-50 people) are currently doing the necessary changes in order to comply.
Sadly, most one or two men steel fabricators are forced to close due to the rather large costs associated with the certifying process.

Being an independent welding engineer (with lots of hands-on practise), I've already helped few companies in the certifying process.

if you excuse my spelling/grammar mistakes (I'm dutch!) and typo's (I can't type for $hit!), I'd gladly participate in this discussion, as I read through the 12 pages and found quite some interesting comments and questions.

congrats for the mod that works in a EXC 3 certified company, I bet it cost a lot of sweat.

We have just completed our stage one audit for our 3834, to say it was intense would be a understatement. I'm not sure where we go from here, although we aren't far from the mark our MD has a lot of trouble justifying the costs. To be fair our appointed RWC has been next to useless leaving me to try and sort out our pWPRS when this is something i have never done before. He was here the other day for our audit and spent most of it asleep (not a bad job at £550 per day!) To be honest I'm very disillusioned with the whole thing,i honestly think it will kill our industry (what's left).
