They ain't one bit worried and past failure rates over many decades show the risk of chancers having a go isn't vast ( actually my experiences show that over legislation leads to greater opertunity for those sorts)
What they are doing is opening the vast UK market up better to other eu nations at the same time penalising small and growing businesses in the UK
At the same time pushing prices up to those buying the end product

I do think the on site thing will get requalified fact is its going to get hard to get insurance for structural without it
With recent happenings I don't think Camoron will win his case for staying in the eu at the promised referendum so it might all be moot

EN1090 states that when no EXC has been specced by the client (this is 95% of the cases), EXC2 applies.

That's a bit stiff. It's quite likely they won't go bust if they don't do it as most haven't
Might be a waste of money anyhow after the referendum
I get the point about class 1 but currently every building inspector I have spoken to just wants stuff to spec as we always did it

This is a good point actually, the default to EXC 2 hadn't crossed my mind. And yes 95% of cases in my experience, don't state which EXC applies.

With a great deal of respect to the Building Inspectors on here, the odd ones i come across wouldn't know BS1090 if it smacked them on the ****.
Them asking for 'stuff to spec' doesn't get you away from the fact that structural steelwork should be to BS1090.

surely theres a specific criteria relating to the type of building/usage rather than assumption.

yes, but there's also § 4.1.2 .
I bet that your instructor also teaches you how to define the EXC class according to the tables in Annex B (SC and PC, together with CC) of the EN1090-2?
But then again, my advice is worth what you paid for it, so don't lose any sleep over it!

Ive been getting my steel supplier to do all structural steels , I measure , send drawings and they do the job , then I fit it . they send me Certs , I pass them on , job done . I may not be earning as much but then I dont do all that humping either ! The only building inspector to ask for all Certs is from Harrow Council , they know what they`re doing !

Are you saying you can also do work and get it signed off without 1090? If you so choose by other building inspectors in other areas? Not that you do but could you?
