Good, I am glad that you are busy.........its certainly slowed down a lot out there.

Distributors going bust, big fabricators going to the wall, its certainly not going to be easy this year!

i think the original topic has wound full circle TBH dya not think? I'm not sure what more could be added about aldi rods, one viewpoint against another is unlikely to ever be reasolved......

There's one point on this thread I've just spotted, Muggins The Mug bought his rods from Lidl and doesn't get on with them, George bought his from Lidl and does, right?

Ok, according to this thread, Muggins' are E4322 and George's are E6013!
If this can be clarified then maybe, just maybe, that would explain why there's such a difference in weld quality!

According to one of those hits, "Electrodes of the E6022 (E4322) classification are recommended for singlepass, high-speed, high-current welding of groove welds in the flat welding position, lap joints in the horizontal welding position, and fillet welds on sheet metal. The weld face tends to be more convex and less uniform, especially since the welding speeds are higher.

E4322 don't exist to my knowledge!

Joking aside guys, would you expect to see that much of a difference between a 6013 and a 6022 when used on what are basically pretty similar machines? You have to admit, George's bead really isn't bad at all and Muggins', well, without being rude and I know he'll agree, they're shocking!

Edit: I didn't want to get too involved in this thread either but after spotting the two different types of rods being used it aroused my curiosity.

I feel Muggins was running his rods too fast in that link, but George was closer to the mark and therefore had nicer results.

I'm staying out of this, but I can understand why Muggins improved his welding so dramatically by changing from rods he was unhappy with as I've been there myself. I'd not be surprised if his welds wouldn't be further improved by changing to a decent welder too.

It's all about ease of welding through better feedback from the whole process. And if you care about this sort of thing the possibility of welding as you would like to. I'm sure one of the pros on here would be able to weld just as well as George with a cheap welder on cheap rods. It might not end up to their normal standards maybe, but the results would probably not fall apart.

While a DIY welder might well find it very much quicker to learn to weld using a decent machine using decent rods, it is also possible to pick up a cheap welder and cheap rods. I suspect most will take this route and I hope not all will be disillusioned.

That's the beauty of DIY welding - the results don't much matter so long as they stick together. Also it's fun to do and us guys have all the time in the world to overcome any difficulties. Those with higher expectations might well move on to better tools or consumables. Others might give up altogether. It's all part of the fun. I'd like to help people learn to weld without too much trouble along the way, but I do appreciate steering from pros, teachers and people who are learning.

I've forgotten where I'm going here, but do remember I didn't want to get involved with this thread so that's all folks.

I'm willing to send out some top brand 6013 rods to either party if they wish to compare like for like with the aldi/lidl/netto/primark brands. Can also send out some 7018's
I know these rods produce exceptional results.

The only rods that are nice to use, are them reallllly realllly long thin ones, you know, the ones they wrap around plastic reels

I feel it is far easier to learn just about anything, when you have quality equiptment and consumables.
Give 2 people that have never ever welded before 2 machines/rods, and see whos comes up the best, i would put money on it being the person with the better gear just about every time.

why would a supermarket sell 6022, surely any non positional fast fill rod is never going to be in the domain of anyone buying rods from tescos? what next castlites, metro Gauguin's, hows about some 7024 iron powders as a BOGOF........

why feck about, just buy em from someone who knows what there selling........
