Last night on the way home from the big city, heavy rain, gusty winds, I went over a but of tree in the road. I was in my pickup, gave the bottom a hell of a clatter, so much so Ill need to have a look for later for any damage. One of my daughters did similar a few moths ago, it ripped off part of the plastic under body protection. The estimate from ford to fix was 1000 quid, her hubby fixed it with epoxy and cable ties. Had it been the bottom of the battery things could have been very different. You want to come over here and do some Welsh driving where we have zillions of 20 mph /26 km/h speed limits and even more of the raised berms we call sleeping policemen that are there to stop speeders.
When you see the damager to the tops of these mounds you'll understand how easy it is to rip the bottom of a car up, driving any thing like low slung or low profile tyred cars is just asking for problems so is bumping up kerbstones etc . Local authorities have themselves covered legally as all the humps in Wales these days are well sign posted .
As an aside the other daughter sells minis, they have leccy ones for immediate delivery, then again Landrover have new Defenders for immediate delivery but the road tax is an eye watering 2600 notes, which I doubt will help the resale value.
Common sense tells us nothing is going to be free for ever, free road tax was a sales pitch to get buyin. Though maybe they need to rewrite the terminology as currently its all about emissions. Roads need funding Id prefer to see pay per miles coz we dont do many, but it would require more big brother tracking drivers and the tin foil hat brigade would just be up in arms about all the data gathering.
