309 is the better, use for everything option, I believe, but for the ornamental use

I'll likely take it to somebody who can do a pretty TIG weld. Done right that can be a thing of beauty in itself.

On that subject what is used to get rid of the colouration you can get around the weld? Years back the fabricator I used would take it outside in the yard and pour "an acid" over it, then neutralise with a bucket of water. H&S would probably have a fit nowadays.

Passivating acid

Can’t remember the name but I use the ESAB stuff. Paint it on then leave it half hour and wash it off.

Full PPE and do it outside. It burns.

Pickling paste I've just read. Expensive though. Hope the welder I have in mind has some. Pretty certain he will.

I welded some stainless recently and (being far too cheap to buy the proper stuff) I gave it a long soak in citric acid. I'm sure it's not as effective as the proper stuff, but it got rid of the worst of the colouration.

It's touch and go if it gets there in time as it is.
The cut really is very small but not knowing its use/ purpose I don't know if it will stick out like a sore thumb or prevent its proper use.

Typically it will stick out like a sore thumb! Hopefully I can build it up, turn down and put the chamfer back on then re-do the groove.

Wondering if I were to hammer a bit of copper into the groove the weld wouldn't encroach too much?

OK. I've been onto our tech department and was told the stainless wire from Machine Mart is marine grade 316L. please don't ask about anything else because that's all I have been told.

Not sure I would have used Evri for next day to be honest. But yes Royal mail strikes make them unreliable.
Can't win lately.
