Fillet comes before any out of positional work IMO. Your vertical and overhead devotes much more skill than a 1G butt and fillet joint.

The lad brought me some 6mm checkered plate back from a job so got him cut some pieces and l prepared them and got a good bit of practice in today. I will be adding to it but mainly just doing runs and getting my speed and arc distance perfect.
The second picture is just showing how much the plate bent from the heat. The last two are the same piece the weld is three layers. And the upright I didn't get a picture of the other side but will do next time i am in workshop

Did you grind the paint of the plate where you did your fillet? There is alot of porosity? Maybe slow your travel down slightly and tighten you arc on your fillet. Also possibly a little bit to cold, maybe try up your amps a bit.

There are people who can explain better as to the why but I'd try to avoid weaving as it's possible to make a not very good job, multi run is a better method and typically stronger.
The only time I suggest a weave is for vertical up (when you get to that stage) after the root run.

From what I know the downside of weaving is that you can get to much heat into the piece and effect the grain of the metal. Rich I'm sure you know if this is true or not. But yes avoid the weaving, there is sometimes applications for it, but on a flat cap no needed. I you've the opportunity try out some different elctrodes.

In short by not weaving you reduce heat input.
This in turn reduces the grain size in the microstructure. Smaller tighter grain size makes a tougher weld and doesn't effect the toughness of the parent material as much as if you had a high heat input.
A second and a third run refines the grain structure even further.
Grain growth I believe is the term used when describing a welded joint that has been put in with a lot of heat input. And it usually results in low toughness when charpy results come back.
A lot of stringent mma wps's actually state a run off length. Ie for every 400mm of rod burnt off you should of deposited 250mm of weld length with a tolerance either side.
