I understand about the mask thing the auto darkness is good idea but I would love to try with a fixed lense see the difference. I have done an hour of runs today just trying to get my speed right and I do tense up I noticed today and I notice the difference in angles as well.
Definitely going to be taking Dan up on his offer now I'm back in work and doing little bits of driving.

each mask has its draw backs and advantages. Learn to use and master what you have. Then slowly add and try new things

An auto darkening mask help you on your initial strike as unless you've mastered the flick you can often be left unsure of where you are. But unless you have a super smart auto you'll find better optics with fixed shade.

Took the offer off Dan tonight and learnt a lot. Late night and few rods burnt but got a bit done and hope to get some pictures up tomorrow going to carry on with what I have started to so.

Iv seen the x steel on YouTube but never thought about doing one but big Dan made me one and it's working a treat. Just angles and being able to move as I am resting on my arm and struggling to move with the torch and rod

I'm no expert but you are doing some good looking welds there buddy ... keep it up ... a question why have you got a load of half used rods in a bucket ?

Looking better, I see you have a full fat electrode holder, one feature of those is that you can (gently) bend the rod to suit the angle if need be, those holders are like marmite, some blokes hate em, but I learnt with and they do for me.
If not already covered, you might want to try a "strike or spark up pad) you arc up on it first, sort of gets the rod hot, can be handy if flux breaks off rod.
Maybe try some stop and restarts so you get the hang of ending of the run.
You may find the spatter is less when you get more confident and run a tighter arc, but well done, time with Dan has obviously paid off.

Thanks guys. The rods are dam in the bucket or half welded ones have been used. That is one think I do need to practice starting and stopping.

if there a little damp you can stick the electrode to a piece of metal and drive a little of the moisture out. But this I've been told is hillbilly stuff but it works for me. Unless its to spec then a rod oven is required. But as said your doing well

He did really well yesterday, his travel speed was way to quick at first. Only had to show him a couple of times and he picked it up straight away. Just need to work on your starts. By the time he goes to college he will of had a good head start on the other lads there.

I've never used bss rods before parks used to stock murex so I never bothered with bss
