I have just purchased a Boxford Lathe

Can pick up a 2hp 3 phase motor for just over a ton. VFD from 60 upwards. Controls you can build yourself.

Nope.
The vfd will run and control the motor from a 240v domestic supply.

Here's the cheap 60 quid inverter I bought a few weeks back.
Live neutral and Earth from a 3 pin plug to the VFD
3 phase wires and and the earth to the motor.
Couple of minutes to program the motor amps speed etc and it's done.

cool I like that idea, whats not to like, its a no brainer then to purchase a 3 phase motor if the one I have is shot

Have a 2hp one of these on my lathe. Been perfect.

Will be buying a few more identical to power my mill and other lathe from the one VFD.

Cheap vfd. Bigger version of the one I picked up recently.

Cheap enough to replace if it goes bang in a few years.

Everything's marked. Hardest part will be scouring the manual to find the pendant connections and relevant settings.
Even the motor should have schematics for swapping the jumpers to delta.

what is pendant connections?I noticed the wiring diagrams on the ebay listing for the VDF very simple

The pendant is the easily accessible control box with controls for forward-stop-reverse and speed at its simplest, easy to put together and cheap, through to the needlessly complicated like mine with fixed speed selection, jog for gearchanges and setup, remote for the cross-slide position to give almost-constant surface speed (with max and min settings), spindle tacho, motor current meter...

Nope, a fiver's worth of bits from China or second-hand, fifteen or twenty new, just switches and a potentiometer in a box

As Dave says. External switches, buttons and pots to control VFD functions. Normally there stuck out of the way in a enclosure.

As a whole kit. AC/DC drives .
Plenty of options available.
Fly lead length.
Motor poles.
Foot mount. Flange mounts. The usual stuff.
I went with the whole package as its easier .yes there are other ways to do it but cant be messed with looking for bits to make it..
