I have just purchased a Boxford Lathe

M4 has a pitch of 0.7mm usual OD is 3.9mm 60 deg angle
4BA has a 0.66mm pitch and 3.6mm nominal OD angle 47 deg

If M4 fits and screws (finger) in easily then I wouldn't worry about it, it will only be nipped up to keep the felt holder in place.
If it gets tight it's down to your local iron mongers for some 4BA.

It is a bit tight goes in a turn and a half I will order some 4ba screws I could do.with 4 new ones for the head stock cover anyway

I used to have a similar type on my Boxford, but I changed it to this set,

Which I prefer to use, I only had two holders, with the old set, and I have so far a dozen of the new set, the old was a bit worn, the cam didn’t tighten enough, so the change was worth it, and I made a clamp lever, to replace the nut that clamps it to the cross slide, so it takes no spanner to take the tool holder on and off, similar to what @doubleboost fitted to his Boxford that is seen in the earlier of his videos.

that looks like a nice post, did the tool post stud screw straight into your Boxford?

I don’t think so, can’t really remember, I think I drilled and tapped the plate that the old tool holder mounted onto the slide, then screwed the stud into that,

It’s only a bit of half inch steel, machined at either side to mount into the slide, with a hole drilled and tapped in the middle, that the stud screws into, not hard to make, but modifying the old one was easier, as it was drill and tap the hole already there.
