It will only be jammed up with crap. Have them out and do them properly. Takes no time. Hell of a lot easier to strip and clean than a 3 jaw

You can just buy Hex brass bar and turn your own now!

You'll find the more you sort bits on the lathe and the more you clean everything up and free it off, the more joy it is to use.

The Harrison glides down the bed so much better now and I cleaned some bits up on the screwcutting box and now thats even easier to operate now. Looking forward to getting that off and cleaned out.

I've got a bit of an oil leak from the headstock gasket and possibly the labyrinth seal but it is so much better than before now.

that is so true the gear box is lovely to use now after a few hours cleaning and lubing it all up

If you look at the picture. The bit your machining is very close to the edge of the jaws. If there is slight play in the jaws this will most probably cause your piece to be slightly out of round.

Replaces the current chuck. Something like a C5 collet chuck

Start with long stock. Face off. Center drill.
Drill and or bore to internal size.
Turn to external dims.
Chamfer face edge of required.
Start parting to required thickness.
Chamfer other face if required before parting off fully.
Clean up the back of the internal hole by hand if required

Move stock out when required and repeat.

it was getting it parted off exactly at the correct size I had the problem with so had to face the other end off too

Dyekem and a scribe, then bring the tool into your line.

Have you got neutral parting inserts?
To get a good finish on the parted piece you can by right hand and left hand inserts. I forget which hand you’d need. @Hood will know

Mag back on a dial indicator clamped to the bed is helpful for hitting measurements.
Zero at end of part and wind in till you hit the dims required.

Pics demonstrating how the four jaw comes apart. Mine is a Pratt & Burnerd but I assume it is the standard for most. Having lengths of brass is one of the best things you can do. I feel my way around jobs where I need to dismantle something with the brass.

Something that’s not meant to move and something which hasn’t moved for forty years can feel very similar. Damaging lathe parts with steel will be expensive!
