I have just purchased a Boxford Lathe

My machines have the tanks as standard, built into the machines or, in the case of the Chiron, slide out.
On the first lathe I had, Drummond M type, I think I used a 5l tub, on the bigger lathe I got next I used 20l drum, I also put a T in the line on that and fed it to my bandsaw that was bench mounted. I never bothered about a filter on them and even my machines now only have filters to stop the solenoid valves choking as the pumps can handle much no problem. A mesh up on the lathes tray to stop big bits getting in is all that is really required when no solenoid valves are used or at least that is my experience.

the tank is probably just the whole bottom of the middle of my lathe then. I just need to make a shelf and sort the pump out

I use neat oil on my lathe same stuff as my gear hobber. Advantage is great at cooling and lubricating the work, fantastic for the machine as it won't rust and barely wear. Disadvantage is it's messy, stays on the part so you have to de-grease and it's bad for the skin.
The Hardinge lathe requires it. water-based coolants rot the apron gears.

what kind of oil Pete? I would prefer to use neat oil I think so to keep the machine nice,

yes please is it just like thin machine oil or car engine oil?

Could probably help you out there, have probably about 10l of it left and I would be fine to sell 1/2 of it. Don't know brand or grade but it came from a friend that used it in multi spindle lathes.
Not sure how posting it would work though as I know a lot of things have to be drained of oil so that would have to be looked into.

Still more expensive than the milk though. I was looking at getting neat oil for my lathe as I'm concerned that it would rust with the soluble stuff, but it seemed a lot of cash for the little work I do on it.

I would think even better to have neat oil if you dont use the lathe much?

So the milk does not mate the lathe rust?

Good idea with the T I could do the same to my mill when I get it in the next week or 2

I will need more than 5L though especially if I T into the pump for my mill

I won't use them they do not pay on insurance.
I only have 10l and want to keep 5l as that will be enough to last me the rest of my life.

Regarding soluble, it won't rust a lathe in my experience assuming you have the concentration correct, it prevents rust to a certain extent, certainly doesn't promote it.

I need to weigh up the pros and cons for both me thinks then

The bottom of the middle cupboard looks like it was the suds tank. I think I can fill.that make a shelf over half of it for the pump then do some pipe work and wire the pump up and it should all be good. Just got 20l of neat oil from eBay
