If the transparent filament doesn't work, you could consider using the 3D printed lens as a pattern, take a silicone (or latex/plaster of Paris) mold of it, and cast one in transparent resin

A 3D print isn't necessarily the "end product".

What filament did you order?
Ive got a dash pod, switch pannel and potentially some fixtures for rear lights to print. Im told PLA wont hold up to the temperatures inside or outside a car in full sunlight.
Im leaning to PETG which can also be translucent?
Ive got some escort mk1 lights in the garage with a broken lense. Lense are over 50quid a pop so you might have saved me a few bob with this idea.

First base plate and lens were miscalculated, but it shows the potential. The transparent filament is perfect and I am currently printing the final version (I hope).

SUNLU PLA Filament 1.75mm 3D Printer Filament PLA 1kg Spool (2.2lbs), Dimensional Accuracy of +/- 0.02mm PLA Transparent​

From Amazon. If you read the reviews, it seems that there was some counterfeit stuff last year, but this seems fine at normal settings.

The ‘Turbo’ badge is made of pla, it was printed approximately 18 months ago.


It is painted and has been outside since. I made a mount for my sat nav which I made from petg and that hasn’t distorted in the heat we have had recently. The temperature inside my van has been in excess of 40°c

Problem is you do need some skill to design it in the first place.

Try running a flame over the 'wrong' one, see if it clears the plastic perhaps?

Yes Parm. I used Design Spark Mechanical. Steps are:

Draw the base rectangle.
"Pull" the rectangle to produce a 'bar'.
One click turns it into a shell.
"Pull" all the edges to round them to the desired profile.
Add the fixing tabs, by the same method as above.
Add a side cutout by drawing a rectange and "pulling" it the wrong way.
Save it as an .stl file.

Filamentive also do a transparent filament. I've used it quite a bit and it's a nice product.

I downloaded FreeCad, opened it. Now what do I do? Clicked a few buttons, got nowhere. Youtube tutorial on the telly with pooter on lap will be next step, once SWIMBO has gone to bed.

no good asking me chap. I dont use Freed cad for the same reason as you..lol I have been using fusion for 6 years plus and started to get used to it and they cancelled my educational licence. Not been able to access it since

Fusion is still available for personal use, it has a few limitations unlike it did before. There was a notification about the change sometime ago in the notification bar at the top Fusion 360 personal
