It amazes me, with these printers, how they can go from fine to crap in the blink of an eye.



Went up to find that on a print, & the printhead was covered in PLA. Cleaned off as much as I can, & replaced the nozzle. Looking at that nozzle on the right, I'm thinking it may have worked slightly loose, to cause it? That looks like oozed plastic to me.

Interesting. Mine has started going the other way. After despairing of getting prints to stick, I ordered some 3DLAC. They tended to be OK with that. Now my last few prints may as well have been Tiger Sealed in place! I have cleaned the plate off thoroughly and now everything sticks really well without the 3DLAC. I am baffled!

I am still seeing the bed going out of level though. One side of the initial skirt tends to be missing as if the clearance is insufficient. Can't find anything wrong and it is fine for a while once re-levelled.

The nozzles do get blocked sometimes. Worth buying a box of matching ones so your levelling is roughly the same

How do you know when a nozzle needs to be replaced?

Usually your extrusion motor skips/slips more than normal. Sometimes you can remove and clear them out with a drill bit - note its the large part of the bore that gets clagged up with burnt filament eventually, this drags on the liquid plastic slowing down or even stopping extrusion.

I usually just toss the old nozzle and put in a new one. This doesn't happen that often with PLA ...

One thing I can't work out is how to turn off say 'circle'. I draw the circle, type in the dimension, press enter. Fine. Then I move the mouse and I am drawing a massive circle and I have to click 'undo'. How do I make it stop?

Yes that is a pain in the bum. Simple answer is not to click again after setting the diameter. It is that which starts a new circle. If I do it accidentally, I just use the undo button.

I printed the MkIII prototype and left it at home! Pleased to say that the BMW brake bleed funnel did its job though. The design was not quite right for both ports so I printed a partial funnel and used a rubber bung with a domestic funnel for the side that obstructed. Worked well and the wheel circuits were a doddle to do. Just open the nipple and squeeze the brakes. Treacle quickly converted to pure fluid.

My most reliable settings seem to have settled on a nozzle temperature of 210C and bed temperature of 65C, PLA prints stick and release as they should. I have upgraded to dual Z servo drive and BL Touch, both of which I think are worthwhile upgrades. Oh and new springs too.

Have you considered removing the springs and using rigid standoffs? With multipoint bed probing you shouldn’t need to adjust the bed so the springs are just introducing wobble

Yes that has been considered. I need to find the time to strip it all out and go through it properly, something is allowing the bed to move. I did tweak the roller fixings a bit last time so maybe that was it, but time will tell.
