i will not be defeated! to get her to start so the missus could get the car out i had to fiddle around with the battery leads so thats a started for ten. got to get it all working by Friday so that i can get her MOT'd because my mate who is doing it reckons lights not working is a big deal! there is a definite delay on the main lights when they come on so i'm thinking bad earth or doggy switch connection

my landy has arived! have managed to get the light to turn on! its got landrover wireing pixies thought as at one point i had it all working including the hazzard light and then only on side light etc etc so tommorow its time to evict the pixies and introduce moden electrical theory to it!

If you try to remove the prince of darkness (Lucas) from the truck, it will probably implode, or at least catch fire!!

The problem with Lucas electrical systems is that they run on smoke, when the smoke escapes, usually due to abraded wires causing "leaks", you have to repair the leaks and restore the smoke before normal operation is restored.

The smoke can be restored by wrapping the fuses with with tin foil, this will allow plenty of new smoke to be produced to refill the wiring loom, If on doing this you see smoke escaping somewhere, this means there are more "leaks" to fix in the loom.

If smoke escapes from a component, eg. a wiper motor, you will need to replace that part, then use the tinfoil covered fuse to refill it with smoke.

an important point to note is that the parts of early vehicles are filled with +ve earth smoke and later ones with -ve earth smoke, blow them out thouroughly with an air line before switching polarity!

Dynamo's only seem to function correctly on +ve earth smoke.

If you try to fit modern parts, like a radio, you will need a "smoke to electricity" converter, unless you connect directly to the battery.

pmsl! there is a red and black banana lead terminal on the dash is that one of those smoke to electric converters? as for leaks there is a couple but it seams to be a black liquid is that just the smoke when its not running?

Handy power outlet fitted to series LR's, even the early Range Rovers had them!

will have to workout when the four fuses do on the steering column. i think the leak could be in there as everything stated working when i had taken that cover off and stopped when i put it back on but wouldn't start working again when i took it off again

on a serious point, the fuse boxes tend to corrode and the lucar connectors disintegrate. give it all a good clean, and try again. if the fuse clips/teminals are loose, you can solder them up to the rivets, as i's all made of brass and copper.

done this on more than one occasion.

i'm going to start at the battery and one connector at a time clean it all up and check for shorts etc the wiring looks ropey but when the lights worked they were a good brightness so it can only be bad connections. i'm going to take the infra red light off and fit some rally spots i have will fit a new relay and feed for those so that no extra load goes onto the wiring.

I'm quite confident working on auto electrics, but the 6 position light switch + infrared headlights switch drove me up the wall trying to fault find! - good luck

the infra red lights work but the normal lights stayed on! there is no marking and nothing happens on the right hand settings of the switch

if it annoys me to much it will get bypassed

No, you are better off using one of these, will switch the current without relays and was a standard switch in LR's that era.

they do a nice rotary switch that does off side and main that could be a good start then use the stork switch to change a relay state for dip and main
