I doubt it, they tend to be cylindrical or doughnut shape due to the pressure. The best bet would be to go to a supplier, especially as your insurance will want some sort of certificate anyway.

Mine was an 80 litre cyllinder fitted behind the rear bulkhead, which on a SWB takes a lot of space.

Reckon on 25% less MPG.

You can fit multiple tanks if you can find spaces for several small ones, but if you're off roading they need to be well protected.

Could be bowlocks but is there regs about placing gas tanks near exhausts? Did wonder the same, using the passenger side to stow a tank. Thought I read about tank/exhaust restrictions. Didn't look seriously though, so take with a pinch of salt....

have been offered a swb series 3 diesle that is knackered. I was thinking of takeing the roof off and useing it as a hard top for the lightweight in the winter. are they a straight forward swop? Also is the diesle engine any more ecconomic that the petrol?

Hardtop will fit but Lwt tub is narrower so it overhangs at the rear. You probs have to hog out holes to get 'im on. Some seem worse than others, mine had lots of overhang. Started to narrow the rear vertical panels but canned the idea and got canvas. Said to be quieter and less wet... hardtops need roof insulation for condensation apparently.

They can be got dirt cheap or free, my top & sides was a tenner.

Diesels, slower, noisy, but decent mpg. Apparently. Not had one.

I was planing to put hard top on for winter so warmer and dryer if the diesle is slower forget that idea not seen it yet but i understand its poor state and is going for scrap i would refurb the axles as a couple of big bits fell out of my rear axle

You may find the ragtop is warmer if you can get it to fit tightly round the edges,

Condensation is a big problem on a hardtop, people tend to glue carpet to the inside surface to cut down this and noise.

The 2.25 diesel is pretty gutless, a lot of work to save fuel on a low mileage vehicle.

Diffs & gearbox would be OK for you, I think the axle will fit, the ends are different but I think that's just the halfshafts.

If you really want a diesel go for the 2.5 either turbo or NA, the 200 & 300 TDIs can be made to fit.

Lwt axles should be 24-spline with flat hubs different to civvy. I've got civvy 10-spline shafts & hubs in mine.
Some, poss all, Lwt axles had reinforcing parts on the cases. Not sure - not much into rivet counting. I've got one with, one without.

update on progress. on with oil change and new sump gasget. Have changed the rear shock absorbers in an attemp to even the back up as she sits lobsided but if that doesn't fix it i presume its new springs. Do pablobic springs make a hude difference and how hard are them to change?


Not forgot photo's just need to get them off my mate as we took camara with us when we wefnt off road the other day

I think you'll find it's the springs.

They are easy enough provided the shackle pins haven't seized up! Make sure you fit the springs to the correct side, they're handed.
