The grinders are absolute pants, not enough power, if you lean on them at all they just cut out. You have to be very delicate when using them, maybe ok for very light work but as an alternative to a corded grinder - forget it!

As for the batteries - the 2ah ones are useless in the grinder. I bought 4 2ah ones when they were on offer, intending to gut them & use the cells in other tools. It takes all 4 to keep the grinder running as you only get a few minutes run time from each one.

If you want a good cordless grinder I can recommend the 18v LXT Makita variable speed one. Every bit as good as a corded one plus it has an electronic governer, so whatever speed you select it maintains that no matter how hard you lean. You can buy the bare unit for around £100 so if you have the batteries already it makes sense. It runs ok on the 3ah battery but the 5ah are a lot better.

I'll take a look in the Sevenoaks branch when I go to stock up on quinoa and manchego on Sunday. The only downside I find is the parking spaces are a tad tight for the Bentley...

There was an old boy driving a brand new Merc the last time i was in the Lidl near my sisters place. He must have been in his 90's and the merc has to have been the biggest model they do. I was having a titter at him trying to manoverure it around the carpark.

Our Local one does manchego for SWMBO and gorgonzola for me. Never seen quinoa though - not that it's of any interest!

Until I gave it to youngest we did the Lidl run in this:

I have found it very unpredictable what sells out and what doesn't in the Magical Middle Aisle of Mystery. I have an ageing DeWalt impact drill but would like a screwdriver - which of course isn't currently on offer!

The boys and I threatened SWMBO with a Bentley Turbo R as a second car for her, so I saw nothing unusual in taking one to Lidl.

The basis was she does under 1000 miles per year to her own account so fuel consumption is irrelevant. Biggest ticket is depreciation and a classic Bentley has none. Loss of interest on capital these days is effectively zero as well. Insurance is under £200. So it's cheaper to run than a new leased shopping trolley.

There may be a slight touch of man maths involved there though!

might pop into Lidl late Saturday evening, worked for the Plasma cutter, car park was empty as well,

Had a Bently T1 for a few years, when I was a salvage dealer, kids moaned like f.... if I picked them up from school in it! lost it once in the long stay carpark at Stanstead, went to the wrong one, called up the control, they looked at the cameras for a car sticking 4 feet out from the front of the bays,

Which battery did you use with it as there seems to be mixed results

2amp/hour but why would capacity matter? My makita only has a 2a/hr battery and it cuts for ages.

@Kram Said it's due to voltage drop with lower capacity batteries, But comparing a Makita Battery to a Parkside one are possibly quite different in build spec also

I cant imagine the cells in these being rated for more than 10A continuious. Stick two in parallel you get 20A. The grinder probably uses 10-20A. So when you push it on the small battery it triggers the current protection and cuts off.

2ah cell / 20a = 0.1 x 60 = 6 minutes (ignoring voltage sag, you will get less). You want to aim for 10-20 minutes or it will be too much stress ln battery, also gets hot. 4Ah bumps that upto 12 minutes.

Remember old 14.4v cordless drills that ran on nicd batteries, they were rubbish. I can say they make powerful drills when connected to a 25v 5Ah lipo pack. These lipos are rated 100A discharge.
Ive modified one of these lipos to be 20v so I can use with the grinder, just need to make up a connector for it, I think it will work very well.

So why do you think running this old 18V Nicad grinder on a Makita 18V 3.0Ah Li-ion battery burnt it out?

Increase the power without improving the cooling is a good quick way to kill something, it will be a much better tool but needs to be used with some care. Brush motors are cheap, stick a new one in..

My drills got plenty of air holes and a 24v rated switch, which is also cheap.

went out this morning, Waltham abbey, no grinders, bought battery charger and larger battery, drill bits and cutting discs, second store, Waltham Crossn empty bin, everything else there no grinders, Girl said they would be out in an hour, this was 11.30! said I would wait then, already driven to both stores twice and waited in line outside for ages twice! eventually she gave up and went and brought the grinders out...… probably has a friend who sells on ebay?

Forgot all about the Watermelon in my rush pick up a strimmer.
Impressed with strimmer, MIL can road test it later.
Fancied the cutting discs, picked up the 125 diameter . They don't appear to have much substance to them - we shall see.
