A common mistake by many. There is no Lithium metal in Lithium ION batteries The term ‘ion‘ should be clear to everyone who knows anything about battery chemistry. These batteries are nothing remotely similar to lead/acid batteries - which do have metal plates and should never have lead in the electrolyte.

Lithium metal, at room temperature only reacts slowly with water - look up the trend in Group 1 of the Periodic Table - but the hydrogen released could, of course, be an explosion risk when mixed with oxygen.

I can edit and put lithium oxides / salts but it doesn't have same ring to it...

If it was in a house, it would be covered in layers of plasterboard to give some fire protection

The current reg state it djoukd contain and remiain in worse case.

I used to worry about the new multi-storey carpark at work, a few times I was sitting in my car as another drove past and you could feel the floor bounce.

You do know what a burning battery gives off don't you?

Hydrogen Fluoride HF, Phosphorus Pentafluoride (PF5) and Phosphoryl Fluoride (POF3) amongst other things, makes a mere bit of Chlorine look positively nice in comparison.

If there is ever an EV battery fire nearby (or indeed a car park on fire regardless of "what started it") I would be driving upwind and staying there until it had all blown over...

What about the airport response vehicles, were they brought into play since the airport was closed to aircraft? No mention so far about them?

From footage they appear to throw foam/water from a large 'stand off' position if an aircraft catches fire on landing.

with evs its going in its own bay with walls either side

it will also have its own ibc water tanks at the rear with all the valves connected to one output so that all the ibc's water thats collected from rain water goes into the tank
push the button it opens the valve fills fast and therefore puts the fire out

i suspect you will need 6-8 ibc's to fill the tank

That would need a roof chop to get it in a multi storey carpark, may as well bling it up and fit a decent sound system and alloys while they are at it.

I don't think there's many multi-story car parks in Cornwall, but they do have smaller stuff.

They sent their normal fire wagons.
The aircraft ones are still required on the airport in case a plane goes up.

Cheshire fire brigade had some low profile Land Rover appliances built to fit in multi-storey car parks, this one was based at Runcorn.

There is a regulatory hierarchy. Airport fire service is responsible for the airfield. County fire service is responsible for the terminals and buildings landside. AFS will respond to a fire landside because they may get there first but will hand over to County on their arrival who will take charge. Similarly AFS will respond to an incident airside, however if it's in a building airside County will again take charge on arrival leaving AFS to cover the airfield. If the runway is closed, they will of course assist County if requested.

No idea if EVs caused or made this fire worse but no doubt many were sadly destroyed as a result - so those African children down the cobalt mines better start putting in some extra shifts to get them replaced asap.

Looks like it was Diesel which is handy as EV batteries are phasing out cobalt, however plenty still needed for Diesel distillation.

Have you seen the price of a LR Evoque steering rack - £3200 fitted and thats not a main dealer part.

Perhaps they could get some for refining petrol and diesel while they are at it...
