That's something I been meaning to getDo you have a dye pen kit Spencer. This will tell you if it’s a crack or not.
Will try that nowPut some white spirit on there and rub it around. If it's a crack, a wet line will be visible once it's evaporated from the surface, due to it seeping into the crack.
That's what it looked like. Could of definitely said there was a crack.View attachment 134383
Is it the line that runs across between these bolt pitches.
Could be a crack.
It would work if the crack is deep but fine cracks possibly running from it would probably go undetected. If it’s where I marked the line and it arrests between those two bolt holes it will be fine. However if there is a tiny branch coming off it then it may be scrap. The only way to tell for sure is with a crack detection method.Put some white spirit on there and rub it around. That's next on the list Richard .will get some crack penetrant dye and test it. Don't want to put that motor on and the plate cracks. It would work if the crack is deep but fine cracks possibly running from it would probably go undetected. If the crack simply goes between those holes then you have nothing the worry about. The stresses have being relieved by the crack arresting at the two points. And it cannot grow any further. I would imagine that’s the case but it would not hurt to check it properly and see if any others are present. Cracks like that usually happen when the holes don’t line up properly and what ever is being bolted down is forced to line up. As in your case it looks like that motor is lined up and bolted up properly so the stresses aren’t there to cause it to worsen. I think you’ll be fine but check it.That's next on the list Richard .will get some crack penetrant dye and test it. Don't want to put that motor on and the plate cracks.
No mate. Awful advice! Hes gonna be bolting a 1hp motor to it spinning up at 1400rpm.You're worrying about nothing at all mate just bolt it up and get making chips.
Well if it’s doubled up yes it’s doing nothing really in which case it doesn’t matter. I wasn’t being a drama queen I thought it was the main support plate for the motor. No need to be a drama queen that plate is doubled up to a steel plate with 5 bolts. It could be cracked like a dropped plate and still hold a motor well enough.
^^^^^^^^^ WHS ^^^^^^^^^^ I am waiting to see what the newly added tang does.Nicely made.
