Cranking up up the wire-feed tension seems to have helped.
I'm away for a couple of days now and then building a workshop extension but i'll have another go ASAP and post here.
I did run a lot of bead today testing including one run of about 24" in one go and it didn't slip into globular at all.
It may well be the spatter was caused by the wire arcing then jerking as the reel go moving so like a double start very quickly maybe. I need to find some more clean metal to test on - i now have a large pile of odd shapes welded together with multiple fillets, heavy beads and god knows what else
