In all seriousness, the very good and honest pest control guy I used on a rental place, said the best poison differs for rats and mice.

A dead rat will stink summat awful whatever has killed it. Usually in a wall cavity, under a floor or where its hard to get at!

Whilst you are, of course, factually correct, it is somewhat hard for the rat to get into the cavity wall once the fen trap, gun, or jack russel has killed it.

Realistically poison is the only one that creates the stench!

Using a fen trap in a mesh cage with rat size openings each end, along their wall run, got two but no luck with the others.

Tried peanut butter on bread on the trigger plate, they took it without springing the trap, smeared PB directly onto the plate, same result, licked it clean. So I blocked one hole and put PB on bread that end so they had to cross the trap to get to it.

Crafty bu**ers dug under the cage and pulled the bait down through the mesh. Trap not sprung again!!

ive seen houses set on fire and a lot of chewed wiring literally blow up but never seen a dead mouse or rat due to it. they must have had there mushes burnt though

What is the advantage of using a Mk 4 Fentrap over say a traditional snap trap (A snap trap which is a rat-specific one..just looks to be bigger)?

the plate is more sensitive to set it off. more chance of catching them as there a lot bigger and snap together . theres a chain on them as well you peg stop em running off if its just snagged and there not dead

They were about 2 - 3 metres away, the "ratshot" in post #21 was about a metre.

Brodifacoum wax blocks are good. My wife was Rochford councils pest control officer (ratcatcher) for ten years. Used quite a bit of it.
Main mistake people make with any poison is to put some down then not check it often enough & fail to keep topping it up.
As long as they are eating it keep putting more down. Warfarin still works but may need several meals before the victim has accumalated a lethal dose.
Brodifacoum they just need one meal & thats it.

That only works to a certain extent depending on the type of poison. Working on farms we had 4 different types. Each a different colour and changed colour every couple of months to stop any immunity or ignoring it. Also change the stations round.

More Important is remove as many food sources as you can.
