These trail cams are fantastic for the money. Set a couple up and caught footage of the little tinker dandering round, as well as his access and egress point, the total opposite end of the loft to where all the clues made it look like he was getting in. Well worth the money.

Will get the holes blocked up and cameras set back up to see if that fixes it.

block holes up with sand and cement and put broken glass in it. that stops them digging it back out

The trigger is more central on the fen traps, so a more conclusive outcome. Plus the spring on them is about 4x as powerful.

They're basically small versions of the old fashioned man traps.

You can get tunnels that fit them off the shelf also, should you not want to resolve that yourself.

Best to wear a heavy duty pair of strong thick gloves when you first get one , despite watching the video from Fenn half a dozen or more times I struggled setting the MK 4 & consequently got bitten by it a couple of times.
It hurt like hell for several days ... nice blue fingers, hurt so much I couldn't use a fork in my left hand for a week nor set the trap for a fortnight or so.


Last time I used it I noticed the brass trigger plate had actually bent under the spring pressure & allowed the trap to fire with nothing near it ..

I'd suspected it was firing off on its own violation for a few weeks , so I set it up on my work bench & whilst I was playing on my lathe at the other end of the garage it went off a few minute later .

Might try and weaken the spring with a bit of heat sometime in the future when I've need of it or have the time top play with .... it's low down on the " Roundtuit " list that's for sure. .

I wouldn't mess with the spring that's what makes them effective, you don't want to have to deal with a maimed rat. Mine I just pull them open and flick the safety over and the safety stays on until i'm done. If it's going off on it's own look at the trigger rather than the spring, I can't say i've ever had to do anything with mine (unlike bloody mouse traps) but mine are over 20 years old.

When I've got time I'll dig mine out and take a few pictures of the bending trigger plate , the safety trigger hook has distorted . . I'll get my welding gloves on adn try to reset it , then time how long it is before it fires off.
Maimed rats present no problems when we started the small mammal farm back in 1992 we were overrun with the dam things , it took 6 months or so to clear the land and get the problem under control , I've still got a four foot 17 mm AF hex all steel donking rod & a 6 foot long handled ladies border dispatcher spade.

Assume your speaking about the little brass flap that flips over and holds the spring down, if so get it straight again and check that the catch on the pressure plate is OK and not bent or worn. Wouldn't touch the spring.

Our neighbour had poison down. The rat died under our floor cavity! You think the smell will be gone in a week, but it just goes on and on.

If I find a hole ,I core out an apple, fill with bait ,plug both ends and jam it in the hole , if you run out of bait a couple of paracetamol will do apparently

I used a black UV lamp at night and found the pee trails of where they got in. Then sealed it once gone.

Excellent idea...certainly give it a go. Might find where they're getting into loft. Must be big for rats also visited.

years back previous neighbour had a feral , it used to go out in our back field , then when it had a catch it would leave it on our step , differance was it was always a rabbit !normally half to 3/4 grown, used to sit there and wait untill we went out and picked up the rabbit ,so we used to have stew that evening . occasionaly a field mouse . Great cat , wouldnt let you near it at all ,he was very wary , (she?) but we couldnt figure that it never took the rabbits to its own home .

Been up in loft and got 4 dead mice. The Wilko 'Deadfast' is powerful..... none were far from the bait. 1 was in it.

The safety hook has almost straightened under a few minutes pressure , making setting and placing it a bit dangerous for someone who has difficulty in kneeling or bending down . Though I'm not sure that it would have been much different on the trip brass plate bending under the strain of the spring pressure.

Somethings bent and putting extra pressure on the springs then if the safety's bending doesn't sound safe. Perhaps it's time for a new one at least you can compare.

Any suggestions on stopping Slugs from eating the damn stuff. ive got some clay pipes wired up, the bait hangs in the middle. The snails are dropping down from the top.
