I think that it is a cheap chinese cast iron vise

It's always a tool that can help ,personally I tend to prefer cast steel (cheap) or better forged steel bench vises (I don't know if plurality is correct) , because you can use an hammer on it (even with a sledgehammer) with no problems
Cast iron vises with steel jaws are good for drill press , milling machine and other machinery tools
Things where if you see someone using an hammer ...He is a dead man

Finally got round to putting some paint on the Record 36 . A bit more work then it shall be going up for sale.

Have a Record No6 which I bought and needed work and was pretty happy with the outcome, have a Record No3 and a 5" Stanley swivel base which is useful if a bit puny.
Well, that's not nearly enough is it

Pick it up from the Gent Wednesday, hoping for a gentle restore/recom & put it to use.
Not sure what's in that hutch but at approx 30kg overhead best to stay away unless you get squished

I acquired this the other day from my pal. Seems to have been left behind as it was there when he moved in and he knew who just to call to take it off his hands.

I have attached pictures. There doesn't seem to be any markings on it. It is quick release and it all works. (Not seized)

Ebay special, had it for a good number of years now. Record no.6 (I think) but there’s been a repair on it at some point and a repaint in the wrong colour. Not the best repair as the jaws don’t quite line up true, serves me well though.

It’s visible on the first picture, going diagonally up over where the no.6 would be. It doesn’t affect it’s use too much, just the jaws are about 1 or 2mm out of square with each other.

This is my Record 74. As already said I am keeping this one.

This is how it arrived to me, complete, used and only one problem I could find.
The small anvil on the top was seized.


Striped down, de-greased and the many layers of paint removed.



The original paint was the hardest to remove. But left over night in warm caustic solution removed most.




The Anvil was a struggle to remove.

This is how I achieved success.
Warm the body, until spit bubbles, cool the anvil down with pipe freezer spray. Add penetrating oil to the securing bolt hole, grip anvil with mole grips and simply remove.
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Repeat, repeat and repeat again.

Then I tried this.
Pump EP 90 into the bolt hole. Using a new bolt and after wrapping the threads in PTFE tape, screw in the bolt. Walk away for a few days and I found the anvil had worked loose enough to be able to be worked out.



Paint and clear coat. Primmer was rattle can. Top coat was brush enamel. No gold highlights on this vice, yet.

I've started cleaning the paint and rust off my Record 517. I would love to get my hands on a Record 518 1/2 if anyone has one that they would like to part with.

so if you guys remember i got 2 vices not so long back but needed to replace the jaws on the one as one was missing, that now been done with mild steel.
thanks for all the help and advice i now have 2 fully working vices
