Can anyone help me identify this please? I've been offered it for free....

It probably is.... Well, I'll get it and give it a bit of a clean up anyway.

Did you? And if so, where's the write-up? Judging by the 'tang' bolted on in the first pic, it looks like it's been used for holding stuff being welded, among other things.

Not yet, It's still in that location, every time I've been there I've forgotten to pack the tools to remove it from the bench. Hopefully i'll be collecting it this weekend. There will definitely be a write up when I have time.

Finally finished cleaning the 517 and given it a nice coat of linseed oil like we do with the anvils. I prefer it to paint on a vice too but it's all a matter of taste.
I would love to get my hands on a Record 518 1/2 or 634 to go with this beauty if anyone knows where I can find one?!

I got this record 36 off eBay on Friday for £35 to keep the 517 company. I could see it looked clean under its coat of green paint but after taking it apart to clean it with the wire wheel on a grinder I now think it looks mint.
I'm going to linseed oil it as I think steel should be seen not painted.

Added two more vices to the collection today. The first is a record 25, one of the good old made in England ones. It's seen a bit of use in it's time but is in good nick and working perfectly, no mug available so a can of monster for scale.

The next one I know nothing about, there's no manufacturer marked on it that I can see other than the numbers 11&16 stamped in the castings. The colour seems to be original. The front jaw is fixed and the rear jaw is sliding.

No idea, I just had to have it when I seen it. It seems to have had a lot of use in it's time as the leadscrew and nut seem to have a good bit of wear.

Point of note, if it says Record Steel on it, it’s a pre-war one and should be painted red.

Personally I think they suit the blue better. I’ve got a big Woden which is a teal green, another nice colour but blue just says ‘vice’ to my mind.
