I like the leather idea. I've read woodworkers sometimes line their jaws with suede.
Once I've got a swivel jaw set up of some kind, I'll make some leather jaws for it.
I seem to be going a bit all out on swivel jaws at the moment. This fortis, I've just bought a sevo vice for the drill, and one way or another I'll get a swivel rear jaw set up too.
Although it did cross my mind I could just take one of the front jaws out of the fortis.

It won't be posted until Friday so I won't have it till mid next week.
It was a decent price but is missing a locking cam.
I have a lathe though, but never tried to turn off center before, so some more learning to do.
Expect some advice needed posts on the subject next week!
Edit.
I'd been threatening to get one for years but I've finally had enough of my record 414. Hopefully this will be better.
Then I'll probably just buy a cheap parallel vice for easy straight stuff.
I tend to work mostly on fixing stuff rather than making stuff so most of what I need to hold isn't straight stock.
Edit 2, or maybe rather than a cheapo, I'll try and find a well priced nippy. Just because of the name!

Jones and Shipman also produced a vice identical to a Nippy. The quality is second to none, and they appear to be under the radar when it comes to price; well worth looking for.

At least normal parallel drill vices tend to be reasonably cheap.

It's actually not in too bad nick. There's no damage I hadn't noticed in the photo's. The rear end of the slide isn't as bad as I'd feared it might be, when I noted the damage to the corners in the photo's. It's had some stick, but not stupid amounts. Looks like someone's probably hammered flat stock over on it, & it's just chipped the edges.

We visited HMS Belfast this half term holiday, very nostalgic for an old docky who worked afloat for 10 years before getting a proper job. On getting to the boiler and engine room I found a Fortis vice, then to the well appointed work shops there were a further 2.

It actually looks like an original paint job. If not, they took some care repainting it.
