Struggling to reassemble my record no 5.

When opening it I have to pull up the slack. Where did the spring and bent washer go and how do I stop it sliding up?

Is the washer supposed to be bent? How do I get it to stay in position or was it welded?

there is meant to be a pin going through that shaft, the spring will br compressed some what which is why washer is bent

You can see the broken pin in between the top two coils of the spring on the right hand side, its sheared of flush with the shaft, some have a tapered pin in them

Cheers pondy. Managed to punch the remainder out. It looked like a broken weld.

So if i find a new 4mm pin (drill bit?) is there a trick to compress the spring back? Or good old brute force and missing finger nails?

I'll have to remeasure to see if it's tapered. It only came out one way as the other was muschroomed over

Picked up another vice for the collection today. Another item I can tick off my unicorn list now.

A Parkinson 8A swivel jaw. Has a swivel base too. Also got hold of a Parkinson stand to go with it.

Can someone with a Woden catalogue or a knowledge of their products help me please? I've just won this interesting looking thing and want to now more about it. It isn't a type of quick release I've seen on a Woden before, only on a Parkinson. How does it work?

You slide it up to the piece to be held and turn the handle. This engages a 'gear' onto the 'rack' you can see in the picture. The rack and gear have teeth cut at an angle so they pull the vice jaw in tight.

Hi I have a predecessor to this Called the Steelrack, made by Entwistle and Kenyon, 9 inch jaws , opens 12 ins and is kin heavy, brilliant bit of kit, mine is c1914 and has original paint, as said in previous post place work in vice slide up and drop lever down to clamp in ,the mechanism looks almost identical but the casting,slides are different , good find, the only and minor disadvantages of this over a screw vice is that it cannot easily be used to push things together like a press, that said I use mine daily and would not be without it , eg work piece in flick of the wrist ,clamped, can push harder for total security but for 99 % that's enough , lift handle for instant release,

This Record 36p was bought last week and I made a little post about it on the "Today I acquired" thread here.

Basically it's in a right old state and hasn't seen much love in a long time.

I set about it with a wire cup brush in an angle grinder, that took the thick of the rubbish off it.There was a lot of cement or plaster stuck to the vice on top of the expected rust. The original jaws are missing and couple of scraps of steel had been badly welded on using a nickel rod. Whoever welded it did some practice on the anvil and top faces of the vice. It's a right old mess.

I think it had been left outside for years.

At the suggestion of BigEgg on here I decided to do some electrolysis. I like my neighbours and I could foresee a lot more angle grinder action otherwise.

I had to do it in two halves as the vice is so big. You can see the messy welds on the back of the jaw. I didn't put the main nut in the tank as it had been well sheltered and you wouldn't see it anyway. I just gave it a wire brush. Same with the end nut.


This is the vice back together. I made up a washer spacer on the lathe to take up a bit of slack showing at the handle end. I also had to take a flap disc to the jaws to remove the unnecessary welding runs and also get the weld off the anvil. This is bit of shame because I like the dark finish and I had to take it back to shiny metal in a few spots which spoils the patina. I might get round to removing the jaws some time and try to sort out a repair but it will work fine as a rough work vice for the time being. The paint shows up much stronger on the camera than it is in real life. There's really just a hint of blue when you see it in the cast iron. The vice has been oiled up and I have raided my mother's cleaning supplies for some beeswax polish which I will look to apply when get chance. I do like the bare metal look and cant be chewed painting it.

Beautiful. Jaws are still available for this model. You can even buy it new from Irwin, something like £1200!!

Well I cannot find my vice anywhere on the internet but I found a link for a catalogue with it mentioned. It is a Woden 189B 0/1 Instantaneous grip. The nut which engages it has gone missing. This is a problem as the vice doesn't work without it. I will clean it up and see what there is to be done. Loads of original paintwork though so that's good.

Been looking for one for ages, obviously I didn't want to pay a lot for one as I have a perfectly good Fortis Unbreakable, son spotted this at the car boot for £20, missing jaws and the quick release mechanism.
So any one have any bits so I can restore it and then retire my Fortis Unbreakable?
