Re flared boiler tubes. I've heard this story more times than I care to remember...
The old boy, Willie Thompson(86) who works down the boatyard, was an engineer in the Merchant Marine during WW2. He joined his first ship (Neleus, Blue Funnel Line) at Liverpool, and as they left the port on an Atlantic convoy he was asked how many boilersuits he had (4), and told to put ALL of them on and report to the boiler room.
When he got there it was to discover that he and the other junior engineers were to go into the still hot boiler (the fire had just been swept out), where, in relay, they had to crawl through to the end, stand up and use a spreader to flare out a leaking boiler tube, then return back to the boiler room before their sweat got through the thick layers of boilersuits and scalded them, or they collapsed from the heat and died, unable to be rescued.
They HAD to do this, as they couldn't not join the convoy, and they certainly didn't want to get left behind later.
This bloke heard torpedoes go past his ship. He heard ships go down. He watched a depth charged U boat, with it's crew jumping overboard, get shot to pieces by every machine gun in the convoy. He missed one ship that was sunk cos he had to go on a college course, and his best mate burned to death on another ship that was torpedoed.
He got threatened back home cos he didn't have a military uniform, just a little badge. No medals, no recognition.
Happy days though. He got all the sex he could ever want, and more (so he says)
He's still a grumpy old sod though!

Aye, makes you wonder....
I believe when he came home on leave he made himself popular with the local female population. He also had a few weeks in Durban where a young lassie kept him out of mischief for a while.... till he was dragged away kicking and screaming to two years on a Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

Is that a harrison 140 I see tucked away in the top left corner there? if so how does it compare up against the myford accuracy and useability wise?
Im in the market for a new lathe to replace my worn out harrison l5 and Ive been wondering about a 140...

Must admit mine always looks like its been carpet bombed by the US air force, still will have to be a bit tidy. I got some 5mtr railing pannels to make in one length. Lucky they are only 500mm high, so just going to buzz a custom frame up to make them in.

Aint used the V140, see the Esab one near the surface grinder - thattuns getting all the hammer now.
I like me own space in the shop so i have all my stuff tucked away in the corner so it can be locked up. Big stuff gets made just away from where the photos are taken on the jigs or tables.
