Thankfully the crash on mine did damage to the top corner casting of the compound slide only. No working surfaces damaged. Easily done when concentrating on the tool as I've proved myself. :/
Haven't striped the bernaurd 3 jaw centering chuck it came with yet other than removal. Also have a crown 5" 4 jaw to make a backplate for. Ideally could do with a smaller 4 jaw too. This one was close and cheap enough though. May repurposed my 3inch from the ml3. Threads are a slightly different pitch from the feel of it anyway.

Is the nut still usable? Thankfully everything on mine is showing very little wear. It came out of a goldsmiths and spent 2 years in a damp shed without ever being cleaned since last use. The only part I may have issues with is the threading gear that is driven by the leadscrew. Looks a little chewed up.

Barely. Requires heavy force to turn it so I don't. I'm just grateful it's not the cross slide nut, that would be a tragedy as the automatic feed would be ********.

There's another Bantam at uni. If all else fails I have considered training myself up to F1 pit-stop-team speed at replacing the compound nut...

Lol. As its getting tight rather than loose would suggest thread damage rather than wear? Could the threads be cleaned out with a thread tool? May give you some life out of the old part.

Result. Baring a hidden grub screw came out easy. Very good condition under there. Felt bushing wipers are immaculate. But dry. Other than rebuilding after paint job done. unless I can find the tumbler arm from a mk 1 I'll have to put the modified mk2 back in. Somebody took an angle grinder to one of the c nuts to get it in. Function over form I suppose. Hidden under the covers anyway.
Tramming won't be hard. The V way continues all the way down the bed and the headstock is aligned tight on the v.
Now to get the casting off.

Only went out to switch off and lock up. 20 mins later its all off and a quick clean. Two T bolts in the bed way fixed to Two cammed Allen bolts to the left and right of the headstick and she slid straight off. New belt required not worth reusing an old belt even though I pulled the glued section apart. Didn't realise it had reduction gearing for feed speeds. Bonus. All works but a little clunky. Gearbox strip down next.

6 bolts. All of which unscrewed by hand after cracking them and the bed lifted straight off. Same for chip tray.
Most of the shelving came out easily. Changewheel shelf screws are seized so oil soaking in overnight.

Two options to remove the motor. Through the changewheel shelf or drop it on the deck and lay the cabinet over. All the other access points are too small. Be interesting to see what the motor actually is. Small it isn't.

Worse part cleaned up. Was debating paint but no room to store without damaging. I'll get the base prepped too then I can build it up again as I paint. Motor next.

Well the motor bearings seem fine. Not opened it up yet.
3/4hp 1440rpm I believe. Plates a bit battered.
The original pulley has had a brass bushing machined to reduce to the newer spindle. Newer spindle looks to have had a hard life. At first it almost looked as if somebody had welded a shaft extension on. Can't machine a new bushing. No lathe. Can't reface the shaft. No lathe.

Spin the motor up and file it more uniform? Then Shim the original pulley to a snug fit. Its the source of my knock. Can hear it spun by hand and its magnified when tensioned on the lathe. Slid a new pulley on with a good fit. No knock.
They didn't put a new keyway in the bushing either. Just relied on a bolt into the shaft keyway to hold it on.
Erring towards bodge as above and purchase 3/phase vfd setup for it down the line.

I would not spin it up and file. The knocking is most likely the reducing bush 'rocking' on the shaft where it's sitting on a high spot.
Clean up any raised burrs along the keyway edges then try to slide a pulley on with the correct bore. Use a black marker on the shaft so when the pulley sticks it cleans the black off then use a fine file to work out all those bumps. you'll get it good enough to hold the pulley true in no time. Once you have achieved that fit a new key and if needs be threadlock the pulley onto the shaft. Threadlock fills gaps up to a few thou thick - in fact it usually required 2 thou gap to work.

Cheers @Pete. Noted for next week. Just popped it to one side for now while I finish cleaning up the cab and bed. Its defiantly rocking on the shaft. Not a lot thankfully. Bushing looks true shaft looks crooked.
Ideally a new motor with correct shaft size without bushings but wife would have a fit. She still doesn't know about the shaper. :/

If you put a dti on the centre drill hole in the end and turn the motor by hand you'll know if the shaft is actually bent. If the dial moves more than a few thou it's new motor (or straighten the shaft) time.

If the shaft turns out to be straight then post the diameter and we can look around for a suitable sized pulley for it, or you can use it as is to turn another bushing.

Well. I have two lathes. One is working but vibrates quite badly. Someone bodged an ally 3/step pulley on the spindle and its worn. Have a nice cast pulley to replace but needs drilling reaming and facing to fit.


The shaft appears straight but worn on in two areas as if something had been slipping. I'll get the DTI,s out another day. Not gonna touch the motor for a few weeks. Want paint on cabinets drying asap.
Now I know I can fit (by removing the cap from the motor) the motor in reasonably easily I can get the rest rebuilt quickly.
Gives me time to look at new motor options too. Have a 2hp 3p in that treadmill I acquired but no idea how to use without the treadmill control panel as yet. :/ a project for another year.

Took 30 minutes to get the paint off the cabinet with a pull scraper Put it on a trolley and rolled it outside. All ready for wire wheel tomorrow. Insides minging. Coat of primer on the insides I recon.

That's what I thought you meant too. Worked fine just noisy. Would **** the neighbours off in the evenings and I assumed a bearing as couldn't hear it with no load. Probably be my route once its rebuilt.
