Na. Probably stay as they are. Was just red oxide last time round. Easy to see anything foreign in there. Same for the cabinet insides. Were all red. Now staying grey.

Oh interesting, I thought they were faded gloss red. My insides are gloss cream or gloss yellow. The yellow works better than the cream for showing up stuff, but mine has had the acid test of years of grease and sawdust!

All depends how well it handles oil I suppose. The red oxide had survived well and looked original. I'll test out on some scrap and see how it fares. Worst case il buy another can of topics in grey.

Grabbed an hour this evening. Probably have to flatten and second coat but I'll let it settle for a few days before deciding. Paint carries on leveling itself for a good while.

Edit. Had to go back out and check. Looks like misses in the images. Must be reflection.

Job and knock today so I made the most of the weather.
Bed striped and cleaned.

Got the gearbox open this evening and was met with a pleasant surprise.

Quick wizz with the dremel mainly around the case. Unsiezed the roller and sprung piston that gives a positive selection of neutral and closed it up. Debating using a little grease inside here. No sign of any swarf or dirt and its sealed. Opinions?

Another piece of the puzzle just fell into place.

Bought a 4/jaw supposedly from a sable the day after my youngest was born. Arrived with no backplate.
Was going to make my own as a project but another one ended on fleabay this evening and is now on its way to Me.
Will save a lot of hassle and being a 4 jaw independent won't matter if it was machined on a different lathe.

Doubt I'll ever find the steadies so I'll be making those myself some time in the future.

My ML3 went off to its new home this morning. Means my garage has had a quick rearrange and I've got plenty of room for the rebuild now. Doors and electrical box went back on while I was there. Saves me falling over them.
No time to paint the bed unfortunately. Maybe evenings this week.

Rebuilding the headstock later. Few other niggles to sort then rebuilding should speed up.

Chain hoist on route to help maneuver the mill into its new home so I'll make use of it for the rebuild too. Been hand balling it all.

I think so - I mean it's definitely threaded but whether it's the same or not...

1 3/4 x8tpi is a possibility depending on what spindle it shipped with.
There's a wealth of different spindles just to be awkward
If I actually manage to replicate and you haven't found one I'll turn a second. (If there the same thread obviously. )

Next job. Clean the spindle and pulleys/bullgears.

Some scoring on the front bushing. On inspecting the spindle the pin for locking collet rotation is slightly proud. Will need fettling before slotting it in. Thankfully its minor and can't see it being an issue.

I've got the backplate for the 3 jaw, but I'd happily forego the 3 and just use a 4 (and collets) instead.

What I'd like to do is find a 5-6" 4 jaw (or even a 4" if it really came to it), mount it on the S&B backplate and make a threaded adaptor bush so I could screw it onto my RandA too.

Maybe I'd have more luck finding one if I looked more often than once every 8 months or so

Any use. 6" but the jaws are a bit too big for my swing when opened wide.

Bed isn't bolted down yet. Will need to jack it up to get the apron under. Spindle went back together perfectly a teeny bit tight but there cold. Will pay attention when running.

Chucks and collets in for the pics. Now removed.

And excluding the already built apron and slides and leadscrew this is all that's left to be cleaned and fitted.

Still need to look at the motor and pulley.
Have a dewhurst switch. Probably worth wiring it in too.
Original start stop switch is present. Need advice on reusing but that's for a different thread.
And a belt to splice.
