Sort of where I'm at, and talking to people it seems to be a popular thought. I have two years to go and I'll have been working for 40 years. I won't stop everything, but it really will be stuff I like to do, at the pace and frequency I want to do it.

Obviously I accept it may not work out like that, 'we plan and the universe laughs' etc. but having that thought at the back of your mind can lift the spirits enough to make it through another wet Monday.

They are still saying it's a blip....but when prices rise they rarely fall again!

Trade rates have been stagnant for a very long time, so it's more of a readjustment than a blip IMHO. The pandemic is just the catalyst.

As long as it goes up in a circle I dont have a problem with it really.

Brother lives in Sweden. He works in a stationery company, something to do with logistics. Hes on around £25/h and that's a fairly low level admin job. But. Hes taxed heavier than here and the cost of living is higher because people are paid fairly, so the guy in the shop on the checkout is also paid roughly what my brother earns. The taxes go back into the community - he says you can actually see this rather than just read about it. Not sure of the ins and outs, as we usually have more interesting things to talk about! Trades are paid well - his father in law is a roofer and I cant remember what his rates are but its a lot higher than any roofer here. Again, everything else costs the roofer more so its all relative.

His disposable income is roughly what mine is, in relative terms. It seems to work there. Not sure about here but there it does. I do not think it will happen here as people always want more and spend less but it'd be nice.

Three weeks ago I made up an order for my boss to put through; should keep my current third year practical metalworking class going for several months - and also get me going for a few months with the new third year class starting after the summer holidays... found out today that it was sat on the desk of the school's 'business manager' since soon after.

When I finally queried the order and we found out that the order had been sat on his desk it was processed quickly but the educational supplier rang back and said that the prices from three weeks ago are no longer valid and they'd since updated the prices on the website - the sheet metal had doubled in price as I'd predicted would happen sometime.

They're CIS wages, so it's an average of £848 after tax. Not great, but way better than it has been for many over the last few years when the cost of living has risen but rates haven't. Maybe, just maybe, skilled people will start to be valued properly?

Wages going up is great....but if you get to the shop and you need a wheel barrow of cash to buy stuff then the net effect is nobody is any better off I think.

It's the age old problem that printing money makes money less valuable...not good for an economy like ours where we import so much stuff I think.

My yearly average hasn't changed much in 10 years.

They will be needing the Unions soon as workers rights are cut below the bone.
As each day goes by I am getting more and more suspicious. There is only one type of person who benefits from mega inflation.

Is a living wage a ridiculous demand? We all know who killed off industries but we are not allowed to say so.

It is worth noting there are a lot of technically skilled and highly educated workers in other professions that don't take home £500 p/w either.
It is not isolated to the trades, technical skills are just not valued in the U.K. full stop.

Yeah, lets go back to the halcyon days of closed shops, conveners deciding who does what and when, calling a strike because someone's been asked to do their job and having their hands in the pockets of working men. By the late '70s they were worse than the people they were supposedly fighting on behalf of the workers.

Fortunately it's never going to happen, Unions have had their day.

Steel plate is getting silly aswel, many companies bidding on seconds, even thats hard to come by now. This is mainly bent, scratched or heavily rusted or all 3. Surprising how many companies accept seconds.
