This Girl Guide Pen Knife.

Yes I cleaned my dirty finger prints off.

This Rope caliper looks good.
But it was bent.


But a bit of bending, a bit of polishing and we have it shinny.

This did not work.

The operating lever pin was broken. So I made a new one and fitted that.

The clock work unit was seized. So I cleaned in a Meths bath. The meths went from purple to black.

The bulbs work, just one has a cracked holder. Fixed by the last owner. It worked, so I left it.

All done.

This was a nice simple restoration.

Un jammed the burner assembly. Tease the door up.

Replace the rotten wick.

Re-bend the handle to the correct position.

Clean the glsss.

In bits.
Fixings are metric. This gives a hint of it's age. Post 1980 for The British army or post 150 for the Europe forces, The blade pattern gives it away.

A good attack with wire brushes the worse of the rust was gone.

This is a over the counter rust killer.
It does not do what it says on the tin.

To get a good result, wire brush, apply, wire brush, apply, wire brush, drink coffee as it dries.

Remove the shaft to blade and you get a trench Wacker. There is evidence of the one edge being sharpened.


This was also a hand to hand combat weapon as well as a digging tool.

The nut is plain, but the bolt is a metric Long Lock design, a per the information found on the net.

It worked, but as it waited in line. The glass on the meter worked loose.

The meter is outlined in Red. 4 hours to get to it. Fix the glass and put it back together.

Everything was Loctite into place. The fixings were all imperial, plus a good selection of sizes.

In it's past life. Some one had removed the french polish and applied a water based varnish.
It cloged the sander, dulled the cabinet scraper and was a pain to remove.

I got this the other day.
I knew it had issues.
Missing drain plug and the guages needed to be replaced.

But when looking at the prices it was getting daft to spend that amount of money.

Then, if by magic.

This appeared.

The switch is dead.

But it had the spares I wanted.

Along with a drain plug.

Up and running.

My boy laughed certain anatomical parts items off when he found mine in with the Oxford welder, asked what it was and got the reply "The Slag Hammer" - guess which bit of his anatomy he referred to as such for about 6 months after...

Got round to replacing one of the three brake shields today.

Typical, the the retaining screw wouldn't come out and got chewed up.

Welded on a nut.

Sorted.

Had to break out the big hammer to get the disk off.

The old screws for the shield were good surprisingly.

Would have been a 20 min job if I hadn't have had to mess about with the welder. Glad I had spare disc locating screws.

I may get onto the rears tomorrow.

I think I've fixed my pillar drill motor.

It's the start capacitor. Weird though. The original that's died was a Chinese 150mfd, but to test I was about to get it going using a capacitor from a florescent batten.

What uF should I run a 1/2 hp pillar drill motor on? Single phase.

Batten light caps are usually very low mfd. Since it's a drill you might get away with it, all you need is a shift to get the motor spinning. I'd shove one in and see if it turns.

Well, the plot thickens..... The capacitor wire came out. As in came loose when I was writing it all up.

So, was the cap dead? Anyway, the connector is crap, rusted screw.

Is it fixable?

This just cost me £215 for the lathe.

Lathe started playing up, it kept tripping the breaker on start up.

Pulled the motor out, awkward job.





Found the start capacitor's guts had made a break for freedom.



I replaced it, and it was fine for a day, then it did the same thing again. New capacitor tested fine, but the motor was pulling 55A inrush current and sounded like death in the brief moment it ran before popping the fuse.

£215 later, this arrived.



While it was largely a direct fit, it is a bit longer and as such the chip tray no longer fit, so it needed a bit of modification.

Yes, it looks horrendous but it'll do for now. Later on i'll remake the entire thing with a new bottom tray ready for running coolant.

Rears today, first a check I had the correct tool to get the hub off. Bought years ago for an A3, it fits.

Taking the rear caliper off is a pita on the golf with electric parking brake, diagnostics tools required so I decided to try to take the brakes and disk off together without releasing the parking brake.

Held on with two bolts.

The whole lot came off together and got tied up. On to the very tight hub bolt..

Looks like the heat shield is held on with the stub axle bolts.

Old shield off.

New one back on.

Bolted back up and on to the other side. Both sides done in ~ 90 minutes.
