That’s why I ended up with a cab star diff in bits on the other thread, with a wrecked pinion shaft. They were shunting it to release chip.
I wondered if it was them pulling away with a laden truck and chipper in whatever gear they came to stop in. That’s a favourite of some of them. Depends what breed of donkey you’re running I reckon
Some of the arb / forestry guys are so hard on kit it’s unreal. Others are really good with it.
Back in the day, we used to make silage in a pit, but repairs and issues with environmental approvals with the water runoff, so changed to plastic wrapped bales. It costs around $10-15 per bale and then you have to get rid of the plastic, and the price is going up as well. I am no tree hugger, but it always struck me as wrong to have so much plastic wrap, recycled or not.
By the simple expedient of throwing money at it, the old silage pit has been extended, drainage fixed, and partly waterproofed waiting for a week of fine weather.
We didn't have the handling equipment for pit silage any more so oursharemilker bought a second hand silage shear since buying new brings out an allergic reaction. This is a fork for the front end loader with a big blade that takes a slice and leaves a clean face. It has had a Dulux reconditioning by the previous owner.
I don't know what it was set up for, but today's job was to blow away the lugs and prepare it for adding Eurohitch brackets. Thanks to the lock down and no deliveries, this is as far as I can get until we are allowed out on parole so,I can get the brackets and some paint color matched.

This hammer was not happy, nor was it is one of the other seven lill buggers.
It was in a sad way.
More hole than wood, plus till active.
FIRE.
No idea how this happens.
But as the handle mas making a fire.
This was heated to red heat and then left in crushed coke and charcoal.
Cheep skate method of case hardening.
Shiny.
Fitted to the handle I made this morning.

Doing the coke & charcoal thing for a day or so is IIRC called a form of pickling . The apprentices had to man the pickling oven through the nights with several 1 cwt. sacks of coal dust and even more of charcoal that they had to turn into powder in a small hand powered grinder

Here's a mock up:
Put the crank up on some V blocks and found the runout. How much there was and where it starts/stops. IIRC it was about 4-5mm but perfectly straight after the outside web. So we marked the exact high spot and took t to the flypress.
Again up on V blocks and luckily we were able to bolt it down right through the offset crank, not at the end as in this reconstruction. Then using a little marker on the left in this picture, gave it a good bonk until I felt it move. It will always "move" but with the flypress, you can feel when it "gives" and goes just beyond the elastic limit and permanently yields.
Then take it back to the surface plate and measure it properly. Did that three times and on the third time, I didn't like how far it had to go to yield because the gears were beginning to move so we called it a day. It wasn't perfect but I didn't want to risk snapping the thing off!

The handle was treated to a good sanding, polishing and waxing.
The stain is coffee, mixed with meths.

That statement caused some consternation in our design team the other week . . .! But proven to be true.
Put a 50 pence piece in a vee block and clock it as it you rotate it . . . it'll show bugger all run-out . . .

I know a seven sided coin will actually exhibit a considerable amount of runout in a 90 degree V block.
Your confusion is due to the (well known) constant height radius, that only works diametrically opposite to a single point of contact. In a V block it will display considerable runout.
As for the general principle that a V block will not "necessarily" always reveal runout in a shaft, I concur. However in this case, it certainly did.

Don’t know if you have checked yet but it is worth turning it over & checking where the sides of the grab meet the base at the back. Probably worth welding in some wear strips as they wear thin where it rubs the concrete, I have repaired a couple of these & if they are left to long the force of the grab closing will twist the box section.

This was given to me the other week.
But sadly its days as a plane is long gone, due to the worm damage.
But it was used to show how to treat worm, use of cabinet scrapers and how to use wet stones.
Once you know how to put an edge on the scraper you soon get a very good finish.
The blade was sharpened and took an edge very well.
The finish is linseed oil and it was buffed up with cotton rags.
It can be used to plane wood, but you can see it flexing as you use it. The worm is so bad it sounds hollow.
We know who owned it.

They have loads of these old wooden planes above the bar in my local. My niece 41(actually a dab hand at woodwork) didn't know what they were. Old wooden spokeshaves too from memory.
