Today I had a friend fitting a new door to the workshop.
Part of the job was fitting the "beads" to hold the glass and lower panel in. Being new they were a tight fit. His hammer was leaving marks and my friend was nervous about taking the glass out.

So.

I had an idea.


A "bead" hammer.
Used directly onto the "beads" and tap the other face with a hammer. The "beads" snap home with ease.

Then.
As I tidied up a bit.

Ok, a bit late, but always this year.

Made this, I'll explain what it is tomorrow once if filed everything perfect and bolted it down.

It's half inch Ali, should be fairly rigid.

A couple of pictures of the machining (term used loosely, a lot of it was done with a grinder).

There's a slot milled into the side of the cylinder to hide the fact that a square face is butted against a curve but I forgot to take a picture of my dodgy setup, I'm sure that would gave made the machinists cringe.

I would not definitely not say that, I was amazed by how much work you had done on the Jensen today though.

Was it here when you collected the Drummond? I trawled through some of the photos looking for welds and the ones I posted are a fraction of what's been modified or repaired. The gearbox went bang in a big way recently and the engine isn't run in yet, thankfully it wasn't attributed to any work I have done.

Yes it was on axle stands, like I said there is a grey one five minutes from here I will try to remember to take a picture of it next time I walk down to Forest Hill.

Finished it now (It's not perfect but I'm bored of fileing ):

It's a bracket to attach the big Zeiss microscope to the linear actuator I got a few days ago.

I need to acquire or make some clamps to hold the bottom of the column securely to my workbench but that's gonna have to wait till I'm home at Easter now. It also needs a neater setup to control the three motors and the light, it's just got a load of toggle switches on wires and looks a bit of a mess.

Nice one, you just need to make your seat go up and down with the head as well, I used to get fairly sore standing up and stooping down to look at the chip dissector.

I got a VDI Parting blade holder today, problem was it was a left hand and I need a right hand one. That meant the coolant would be going the wrong direction, to the back of the lathe instead of onto the tool. I hauled out the nozzle and plastic insert and drilled through the whole depth of the holder. Wasn't too bad until I was just about through and it was into the hardened layer and it grabbed and snapped the drill clean through. The drill was stuck solid and as it wasn't breaking through the other side I couldn't punch it back so I had to try something else. Managed to get a bit of stainless rod and welded a bridge between it and the drill, let it cool and managed to untwist it from the hardened bit and pull it out and then got through the last wee bit to the other side with another drill.
I then made a plug up from some, I think , PEEK rod for the original hole and I counterbored the other side out to 12mm deep and made an insert to hold the coolant ball.
